Solong anak siya. Maagang naulila, sampung taon pa lang. Una, yung nanay niyang si Nelima, complications due to appendicitis. Nagiinom si Celestino, tatay niya, dahil sa pighatî, at kalaunan, namatay na rin pagkaraan ng dalawang taon sa sobrang lungkot. Inampon siya ng mga tiyuhin at tiyahin niya, binunot sa Masbate kung saan siya ipinanganak, dinala sa isang islang malapit sa Calbayog, Samar, duon nag-aral hanggang high school, naging isang honor student, pumasok sa UP Los Baños, natapos ng agribusiness management, kumukuha ng abogasya sa Arellano, at ngayon:
Nakakuha ng katapat ang mga maiingitin, iskandalosang, tsismosong trolls.
“Organic kasi ako,” sabi niya. “Tunay akong tao.” Organic meaning hindi pumipindot sa mga nakahilerang smartphones, walang laman ang Facebook page, hindi tutuong tao, pagnagpost sa FB, libu-libo kaagad ang likes. Akala mo talaga 16 million.
Siya si Jover Laurio, mas kilala sa pangalang PAB o Pinoy Ako Blog. Trentay-ocho (38) anyos, nag-aalaga sa mga tiyahin niya na may malubhang karamdaman, nakukuha pang mag-aalaga ng dalawang lola na ‘di niya kaanu-ano na nagtitinda ng mineral water sa Shaw boulevard—nalaman lang niya ang kalagayan dahil nag-viral—fiancee in Mark, isang DDS, at duon nag-uumpisa ang aking kwento.
“H’wag na lang tayo magbasa ng ating mga postings sa Facebook at Twitter,” anila.
Kamuntik na silang maghiwalay.
Galit kasi si Jover sa P1,000 na budget ng Commission on Human Rights nuon. Sabay sila nag-unfriend ng isa’t-isa, alang-alang sa kanilang pinagsamahan at pagmamahalan.
Si Mark kasi, basta ganap ng Duterte, andun siya. Sa Luneta nung miting de avance, isa siya sa mga tumangan ng bandilang Pilipinas, yung higanteng bandila ng bayan nating mahal. Tikom ang aking bibig kung gaano siya kalapit sa sentro ng ginagalawang Duterte, pero makasisiguro kayo na komplikado ang katayuan ng magsing-irog.
Pinag-awayan nga nila ang political convictions nila, pero hindi iyon naging hadlang sa pagyabong ng kanilang relationship. Sweet pa rin sila sa isa’t-isa. Tone-tonelada ang pangunawa nila Mark at Jover, at ayun, larawan sila ng pambansang hidwaang Dilawan Atbp.-Duterte, gaya ng mga pamilya, barkadahan, magka-upisina, magka-frat, at kung anu-anong institusyong ng Pilipinas kung saan nandun ang mga nag-iisip na mga Pilipino. Never magkakaunawaan, pero tuloy pa rin ang pagmamahalan gaya ng kila Jover at Mark.

Nagsisilbing munting larawan ng bayang marikit ngayon.
Teka, bago ang lahat, bigyan muna natin ng konting konteksto ang pinanggagalingan ni Jover para makakita tayo ng mga palatandaan ng kanyang masidhing pagmamahal sa bayan.
Mahilig siya magbasa: John Grisham, paborito, Rainmaker; Sidney Sheldon, If Tomorrow Comes; historical and contemporary romance novels by Judith McNaught; Danielle Steele. Nakuha niya ang pagka-bookworm sa kanyang ina-inahan na si Mama Nelly Escalante, kanyang kasama sa bahay, pati na rin si Mama Nila Medina, na kasalukuyang ginagamot sa cancer. Si Mama Nelly naman, cancer survivor.
Paglabas na paglabas pa lang niya ng kanyang tahanan, natatanaw niya ang mga naglalakihang gusali ng isang central business district. Malamang, ikinagagalak niya ang tanawing ito sapagkat dito siya kumuha ng ikabubuhay: isa siyang call center employee, oras niya 8am-5pm, may komisyon depende sa tanggap na subcon.
Sa kanyang di-kaliitang sweldo, nakakapag-aral siya ng law sa Arellano weekend course, Friday nights, whole of Saturdays and Sundays, kung saan second year na siya.
Oops. Maiba lang ako. “Sa Arellano law din papasok si Mocha Uson sa susunod na semester, ‘di ba?” tanong ko. “Oo,” sabay ngiti. “Aawayin mo ba siya?” “Ipinalaki ako sa magandang asal,” aniya, “kung kayat kakaibiganin ko siya.”
Ang bait naman.
Inaamin naman niya, forgiving siya to a fault.
Bakit siya tutol kay Duterte? “Kasi walang remorse (pagsisisi). Hirap ang tao mag-call out sa kanya.”
Ano ba ang definition mo ng maayos na leader? “Hindi corrupt, conscious sa human rights, may delicadeza, hindi bastos. Paano na lang kung nakikita siya ng batang nasa elementarya pa lang?”
Oo. Laman din siya ng rally katulad ni Mark. Magkabilaan nga lang sila. Nung nakaraang rally nga na tinawag ni Bishop Soc Villegas, nakilala siya nito at sinabi sa kanya habang mahigpit na niyayakap: “Be strong, God is with you.”
Marami nang nakakakila sa ‘yo, ‘di ba? “Oo. Pero sa bahay, si Jhanjhan pa rin ako. Inuutusan pa rin bumili ng toyô.”
“Last Saturday ngâ,” kwento niya, “may mga magkakapatid na nakilala ako sa isang mall.” Inaya siya sa isang restoran, gusto siyang masolo. Sinabi daw niya sa magkakapatid na:
“Responsibilad nating lahat na labanan ang fake news.”
At ayun na ngâ. Heto na si Jover Laurio, maagang naulilâ, sobrang mapagmahal, mahilig magbasa, ayaw na ayaw sa balahurâ, kilabot ng mga troll to the point na ipinahiya ng isang nagngingitngit na pro-Dut ang journo na si Jonathan Head ng British Broadcasting Corp. kasi minor blogger lang naman daw si Jover at
Bakit si Jover ang ininterview ng BBC?
Nagumpisa siya maging intense sa paglaban kay Presidente Duterte bandang March last year. Nagulat siya nang nakakuha siya ng 10,000 shares sa kanyang posting sa Facebook, na “Kung Bakit Ayaw Ko Kay Duterte.”
Nangampanya siya para sa Ro-Ro pero nang matalo si Mar Roxas, pinilit daw niyang magustuhan ang bagong pinuno ng bansâ. ‘Di niya kinaya, kung kaya’t bandang September, bago pa lang kauupô ni Presidente Duterte, sumulat na naman siya ng “Kung Bakit Ayaw Ko Pa Rin kay Duterte.” Buklatin ninyong maigi ang mga mata ninyo: 29,000 likes.
A star is born siya bigla. Tatlong beses nga siya na-suspend sa Facebook, kagagawan ng mga pro-Dut.
Kung kayat humingi siya ng domain kay Cocoy Dayao para may sarili na siyang blog at ligtas siya sa suspension sa FB. Yun ang simula ng Pinoy Ako Blog. Wala nang Jover Laurio. PAB na lang ang signature niya sa mga posts niya.
Tinarget siya, parang mga bubuyog na nabulabog ang bahay-pukyutan. Hindi siya tinantanan. Hanggang sa sinambulat ng isang pro-Dut blogger kung sino talaga siya. Nilait-lait siya. Pagnakita daw siya sa personal, sabi ng isang ubod ganda’t-guwapong troll, magkaka-reverse erection daw.
Nasaktan si Jover nang husto. Huminto muna siyang mag-aral sa Arellano. Pati sa work. Binisto din kasi kung saan siya nagtratrabaho.
Nitong November 2 lang nanumbalik ang dating Jover. Bumalik na siya sa pinagtratrabahuhan niya. Sa January next year, balik Arellano na rin siya.
Nakalipas na ang unos. Tinalo ng liwanag ng katotohan, tinalo ng suporta’t pagmamahal ng tao sa kanya ang kadiliman na idinulot ng pagkabisto ng tunay niyang pangalan.
Natatakot ka ba? “Protektado naman ako ng Diyos.”
Patas naman siya. Nung napansin niya na hindi kumikibo si Vice President Leni Robredo sa mga paratang na may lover daw, tinuligsa rin niya ang second highest official of the land. “Pamilya na kasi ni Leni ang tinitira, bakit ayaw niyang magsalita?” sabi ni Jover.
Ayan ang buhay ni Jover. Gusto niya kapag naging abogado na siya, duon siya sa PAO, Public Attorney’s Office. Maliit lang ang sweldo dun, alam niya, pero gusto niyang mag-give back. Isang beses kasi, inilathalat niya sa FB na ‘di na niya kayang ipagpatuloy ang pag-aaral ng law gawa ng kulang ang pang-tuition.
“Nag-message sa akin si Carlos Celdran,”
sabi niya, “Tinanong ni Carlos Celdran kung magkano daw ba ang tuition at kung ano ang number ng bank account ko. Nagdeposit ng P12,000. Hindi ko siya personal friend, ha, pero tumulong siya.”
Habang nag-aaral si Jover para maging abogado ng bayan, ayun siya, nagtitinda ng ulam sa office, sisig with rice, P85, kung minsan ibang putahe, bibilhin niya ng P60, ilalako niya ng P80, dadagdagan na lang niya ng kanin na kanyang isinaing. “Mahal kasi ang libro,” aniya.
Sa law school siya naging mapanuri, yung palaging facts lang, ebidensiya. Sa kanya nanggaling ang salitang “resibo,” ang tutuligsa siya pero palaging may proof, may factual evidence.
Resibo. Jover. PAB.
Iisa lang yun. Nangingisay ang mga naglalakô ng fake news kasi may resibo siya. Hindi hakahaka katulad ng mga troll na kung saang impiyerno kumukuha ng balita. Turo yan ng Arellano. Nakakuha ng katapat ang pro-Dut bloggers. Liwanag laban sa kadiliman.
“Akala kasi nila, walang magko-call out sa kanila,” sabi ni Jover. “Ayan, resibo.”
Patuloy ang PAB.
Seven hundred fifty plus (750+) articles na ang nalathala niya.
“Gusto ko siyang gawin, siya ang hininga ko, everytime I’m scared, or happy, I blog. Blogging is my release.”
Sa Uber pa lang, pauwi, nagpa-PAB na siya gamit ang smartphone niya. Oppo lang, mura lang. Hindi siya nagla-laptop, phone lang. Pero naman, tingnan ninyo ang epekto ng Uber at Oppo.
Tapusin natin ang kwentong ito sa JovMar love team. Nagkakilala sila sa isang party nuong 2014. Maayos ang relationship nila kahit na hiwalay ang landas politikal nila; pagkatapos daw niya mag-aral ng law, saka sila pakakasal.

I have admired PAB for the intelligent, informed and witty takes on fake news and fake “leaders”. became am even more delighted follower, after having found out that she is a woman, and now I’d like her to know how it is so soul-refreshing to come across a home-grown Filipino who is so authentic, brave and true!
Yes, Digna. The word is authentic. She doesn’t have pretenses. What you see is what you get. When I requested that the interview be conducted in her home, she said, “Pasensya na po kayo. Maliit lang ang bahay namin.” Well, for the benefit of trolls who insist pro-dem advocates are well-paid, she’s a struggling heroine, the kind we see in our homes like our lola, nanay, ate, tita or pinsan. Socio-economic class C. Sisig rice for sale! I looked around and spied a lonely two-burner stove a foot away from where I sat in the the receiving room, jalousies with no curtains, the whole house as bare and effective as the way she writes. You wonder where she gets the energy. But she was raised that way, in hardscrabble island life, eking out a living from daily catch, growing up as an orphan. And yet she doesn’t have drama. No self-pity, no regrets, no hesitation. She looks at you straight in the eye like she belongs, living a life of mission first for others less fortunate than her, then for the country she loves even if giving is painful.
That note adds greatly to the blog article proper, Will. Makes my eyes misty.
I was “rinding-rindi” na with Mocha and her league and was looking for someone na pwede nilang makatapat on socmed. I followed Madam Claudia, Amor Powers, and even Señora Santibañez and I think meron pang Obosen. But when I came to know of PAB, Wow! This is it pancit! There was a time pa nga I called the attention of PAB thru PM because of one mispelled item on her blog. I told her ayoko siyang mabanatan ng pro duts bcos of that one mispelled word. She replied to me and very humble naman. That time she earned my respect agad. Unlike those other bloggers I’ve mentioned I sent two of them some materials which they can use for their blogs but the respond was so disappointing kaya hindi na ako umulit.
So that is Jover…deserving of everything she got in her hands now, a minor blogger but enough para umusok ang ilong ng isang major major blogger, Congrats to you and wishing you all the best to come in your way. Wish ko mameet din kita and have some selfie shots with you and of course to be an FBF na rin.

Wonderful piece again, Will. Jover is a very admirable and strong woman. Now, after all the long take on her family’s and her present struggles, the unos coming from PAB’s enemies, etc., you ended the article on a positive note, the all-inclusive virtue that is love, the strong bond between her and Mark. It can only become stronger if they will stand on the same yard of the political fence, the moral one. I know Mark may still change, and if he is reading this thread of comments, I will not touch on what is right and what is wrong as some people will say that morality is a matter of opinion or cultural differences. Rather, the word ‘respect’ which sires fairness and justice. If we want to be treated with respect by the other person, we should do the same thing to that person. Even if a person is a criminal, he deserves a fair trial which is more of a reflection on the one desiring and giving it. If one would wish that the criminal should die because he killed other people, then he has joined the ranks of that criminal. Wala na silang pinagkaiba. This line of thinking by the PNP and some individuals was undeniably fomented by Du30’s ‘kill, kill, kill’ well-documented pronouncements. Du30’s ‘war’ on drugs (which is selective, focusing on the poor and powerless) may be a good thing but the killings have certainly negated it. Burado. Wiped out. Nothing will justify killing a person. That is the most abominable thing one can do to a fellow human being by people who at some point in their lives will also demand, ironically, to be treated fairly and just. There are other methods of dispensing justice, ways that are rooted on – respect.
“If we want to be treated with respect by the other person, we should do the same thing to that person.” Thanks, Larry! It’s a simple reminder of a basic thing, but some of us have forgotten that good manners and right conduct beget good manners and right conduct. 1. At first glance, the spectacle of Supreme Court justice Teresita Leonardo De Castro giving testimony against Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno in Congress is incongruous. Like a lioness before a kangaroo court.
2. But we have seen this spectacle before, haven’t we? It is the same scenario as hardened criminals from Bilibid concocting stories to traduce another woman of courage, Senator Leila de Lima.
3. Except that instead of convicts, we have an august justice from the highest court in the land feeding morsels to the eager, salivating maws of the legislative swine.
4. August? Yes, but perhaps only in the sense of occupying a high judicial office and not in the sense of inspiring reverence for dispensing Solomonic justice.
5. For De Castro, in her judicial unwisdom, voted among other decisions:
o To allow convicted plunderer Estrada to run for mayor
o To release charged plunderer Enrile on bail
o To free charged plunderer Arroyo from trial
o To allow the burial of the greatest plunderer Marcos at LNMB
o To keep non-plunderer De Lima incarcerated
5.1. In all of these decisions, Chief Justice Sereno—alongside with judicial lions Antonio Carpio and Marvic Leonen—dissented.
6. So why is it that Chief Justice Sereno is the one undergoing the process of impeachment? Who, exactly, is betraying the public trust?
6.1. And if we are talking about the culpable violation of the Constitution, why consider Chief Justice Sereno and Ombudswoman Conchita Carpio-Morales?

Hi Rogelio! Salamat sa feedback mo. Yes, only love can drive out hate. Jover Laurio is the poster child for the fight against infamy. She can dish it out, but she will always be imbued with the right values. Bottomline: mabait na bata si Jover. She’s such a creative writer that she doesn’t have to resort to cursing to get her point across. A like for Jover is a like for the Philippines before Duterte. We want our Philippines back, and a young adult is helping lead us to recover what was lost.

Thanks, Will for this article. What I like with PAB is she supports her arguments with evidence. The other side when they lose the argument, they resort to name calling and disrespectful responses. Some of us, I notice, start to do the same. And, I find it disturbing. PAB is showing us how to be decent in all these arguments. PAB is showing us how to reclaim the values that are important to us. PAB is us.
