Nakikita natin siya araw-araw. Nagma-mop sa McDonald’s. Nagba-bagger sa Hypermart. Nagwe-welding sa ironworks. Siya ang mukha ng kinabukasan ng Pilipinas. Tawagin natin siyang Edward. End of contract, o endo. Makinig tayo:

Edward, good evening.

Aah.

So, ikaw kanino ka?

Hindi ko pa po iniisip. Pero sigurado po ako hindi ako Binay. Baka po Grace Poe.

Pwede bang malaman kung bakit?

Kung bakit po hindi ako Binay?

Sige, Binay muna.

So?

Bakit?

Uubusin daw niya ang masasamang tao!

Gusto mo ba nuon, yung summary execution?

Opo.

Kahit may topak?

So, Mar?

Bukas ulit, kasing sipag, okay?”

“Opo, Ate Elma, tink you po!”

  1. Bravo wil. This needs to be a comic book. Dear Roxas team. MAKE THIS A CARTOON A RADIO PLAY, A COMIC BOOK, A SHORT FILM AND A COMMERCIAL.

  2. karl garcia says:

Oo nga Communication team of Roxas you can adopt a few blogs here for your memes and this blog in particular for a comics strip.

  3. Micha says:

    Hindi sira ang Pilipinas?

That assertion will only strengthen the Grace Poe narrative because the marginalized and the common folks, herein caricatured, will most certainly not agree with it. That disagreement is patently reflected in the survey results. Poe’s message (aayusin ang Pilpinas) is resonating with the masses because in their daily life routine they can feel and smell and see that something is rotten in the state of Pilipinas.

    • I looked at this article before it was published and told Will it was great… well I did have some reservations about it POSSIBLY sounding condescending but Will does have the rare talent of being able to speak to both sides of the Great Philippine Divide…

To be there is like balancing on a tightrope over the Grand Canyon sometimes, and I am sure the responses will be varied some angry.. but that is OK because a national discussion about how the country is and how it should be is something very much needed.

      11. New by Irineo: ano ang gagawin ninyong solusyon para sa Maynila. Punong-puno na at matrapik. Decongest Manila, move government offices elsewhere, move the airport to Clark or Cavite, move Camp Aguinaldo and Crame out, maybe even Bilibid and Muntinlupa to totally different areas? How to handle it?

In summary, ano ba ang balak nyong maging legacy ng inyong administrasyon?

      • Micha says:

Mar Roxas is in a political contest. He needs to win votes. Most of the voters are poor, ignorant, marginalized folks who are vulnerable to the charms and campaign rhetoric of politicians.

Now Roxas tend to project himself as more of a technocrat than a politician. That may be good in an advanced democracy with a more informed electorate but in our part of the world that is not helping his survey numbers at all.

He needs to go out there and play the game of honest politics.

Ano ang mensahe nya that could capture the interest of the masses?

        • I worked in McDonalds Bonn for 2 years: 1983-1985. I was with migrants, refugees and other young students like me… I know how it feels to be in the dirt.

To be credible to the masses you have to have rolled up your sleeves, been in the mud. Leni has. Mar Roxas has – what Gian told me about moving bodies in Tacloban.

That kind of credibility is something that they FEEL when you are talking to them. Something that comes across when Mar is in town hall meeting like CNN.

Well, many of his staff seem to still belong to the maarte crowd. They should go work with Edward undercover for JUST TWO WEEKS to get it. Go to where I have been.

        • bauwow says:

I agree with Micha that Mar projects himself as a technocrat. Giancarlo had an idea that Mar should have someone swinging mud at his opponents. Du-dirty easily connects with the masses because they like his swagger and bravado. Not that Mar should imitate him but he should employ someone who will connect with the masses. He already did it as Mr. Palengke, he can do it again!
The first quarter is about to end, now is the time to shoot some threes.

    • Joe America says:

Too bad they can’t see or acknowledge the progress being made, as if one could go through Dante’s Hell without a little effort climbing back out again to find Paradise.

      • The last six years have been Purgatory… now that is a nice way to say it…

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Purgatorio has all seven deadly sins in it.

      • Micha says:

They can’t see it because they still feel alienated. And poor.

        • Before I actually LIVED in relative poverty compared to my UP Diliman childhood… meaning apartment not house and walking to school because the money to buy a bike was not in budget yet and taking the bus was a luxury… later biked to McDonalds to work there on weekends to pay for my driving school and license and have a little extra cash… I was a salon leftist who did NOT know what I was talking about, only the theory.

I was an awkward “senorito” in my first months at McDo… burned the burgers or did not fry them enough, dropped the bread… yep it was like Mar Roxas carrying rice or directing traffic – “hindi bagay”. But I learned the normal world – and how to reach normal people.

          • https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trading_Places – 1983 movie I didn’t watch.. because I was in that situation.. I know ups and downs… Conrad Hilton was broke twice… do THEY know?

          • Micha says:

For the common folks, it’s the message that counts. They can live with their poverty in the meantime but for a politician coming to them seeking their votes, you need to inspire them, give them hope, something they can look forward to while they suffer.

Mar Roxas is not doing enough of that.

And that is why he’s still in 3rd place.

            • If I were in his situation, I would go to where the people are. With Leni.

Listen to them. Find out what their needs are. Think of solutions and communicate them.

              • Joe America says:

They are doing exactly that, traveling separately which allows them to touch more areas. Intense travel schedule interspersed with radio and television shows and other forums. Exhaustive, exhausting. I’m always surprised that they both look fairly fresh and alert. I’d be snoozing.

              • karl garcia says:

So they say he is an elitist and a snob, time to go to the streets and listen. No need for boodle fights, but if the people want boodle fights then fight.
Town Hall meetings should be more, and it should have enough news coverage.

              • Thea says:

We have to differentiate the poor into city dwellers and “promdi”(rural dwellers) These two groups have different culture, problems, needs and preferences. The alienation that Ma’am Micha, based on my encounters with the rural folks, are not that great in the rural places. Even they are poor, they are lively. The likes of folks in the pictures of Leni. They are more emotionally grounded. Whereas, for the city dwellers, their alienation is generally seen in the disparity between the rich and poor. The feeling of “left-out”, the declining regard on family values, lesser concern on neighborhood, harsh street life. That is why, Duterte appeals to these kind of people and Duterte is not doing any good. He is alienating them more. Roxas has a moral based upbringing. The man will govern by this upbringing. I believe, he understands them like how Leni feels with the rural folks. To reach the far flung places first is good(then address the cities).

    1. pagbati Opening or attention getter – Address the individual. “Hey Chief,” or “Captain Smith,” or “Bob,” or however the name or title that will get the person’s attention.

    2. anong problema? State your concern – Express your analysis of the situation in a direct manner while owning your emotions about it. “I’m concerned that we may not have enough fuel to fly around this storm system,” or “I’m worried that the roof might collapse.”

    3. anong sitwasyon? State the problem as you see it – “We’re showing only 40 minutes of fuel left,” or “This building has a lightweight steel truss roof, and we may have fire extension into the roof structure.”

    4. anong solusyon? State a solution – “Let’s divert to another airport and refuel,” or “I think we should pull some tiles and take a look with the thermal imaging camera before we commit crews inside.”

    5. anong gagawin NATIN? Obtain agreement (or buy-in) – “Does that sound good to you, Captain?” These are often difficult skills to master, as they may require significant changes in personal habits, interpersonal dynamics, and organizational culture.

“gagadanin kita” – papatayin niya raw… so let people cool down first.

        • Thea says:

Duterte is pikon.

        • Waray-waray says:

Rational-adj./(Merriam -Webster): based on facts or reasons and not emotions or feelings.

          In Tagalog = makatwiran; matwid
          Cebuano = makataronganon/rasonable
          Waray = makatadungan

Is it mere coincidence? Matwid as in Matuwid. Or the Waray translation “Makatadungan” from the word “tadung” meaning “straight”.

    • Micha says:

And over at Rappler, they were saying that this election will actually be decided by social media.

Something is amiss in the strategy.

          • Show better perspectives… the thing that was also amiss in the Fast Forward Video is that the only dark people were a construction worker and an ice cream vendor. Show how people can rise up and be more, or at least their kids… Joe’s thing about opportunities.

          • Micha, please join us in the social media. FB is sooooo popular even in the far flung rural areas in the provinces. I’m reaching Marinduque, Mindoro, Batangas, Samar, etc, etc.

    • Ireneo,

I’d only known about CRM from Gen. McChrystal’s “Team of Teams”, http://mcchrystalgroup.com/teamofteams/ , but that above is pretty much what Marines are also taught—- and why Tact is the grease that makes any assertive process work.

People will get butt-hurt, I don’t think Filipinos have monopoly of this, but when someone in your team makes a good case, his idea gets center stage until another better idea comes along.

Troop welfare & Mission accomplishment. Troop welfare concerns the morale and cohesion of the team or unit or entire organization, it’s important that everyones’ need are met in order to accomplish the mission,

but at the end of the day, it’s the mission that takes priority, how one feels is superseded by the mission, not the other way around. There’s work to be done.

Thanks, I applied aspects of CRM in a critical project situation YESTERDAY..

        ———————————–

And I will practice it even more the next few days… critical new project… in Türkiye…

The aspect of avoiding butthurt is important… I said sorry I’m pushing but we gotta move.

Fortunately most in the team are goal-oriented and not personalistic, meaning butt-hurt.

        ———————————–

As for Philippine politics, Mar is the best choice, but all candidates have weaknesses.

Elections are for Senators, Congressmen, Governors, Mayor, Councils as well 2016.

The Filipino people will have to choose the right people at ALL levels for things to work.

Presidents don’t make the laws, the House does, local level in an archipelago counts.

And since almost all choices are dynastic families, Filipinos may need to apply CRM.

They will have to lead their leaders in a mature manner, not by griping like until now.

I would like to find out myself. But, I can’t help making this statement: wouldn’t something like — to prove it is not a myth, show the people your diploma or a certified statement from Wharton in keeping with Duterte the lawyer, rather than about asking for an image of Mar with a Toga and Mar’s mother present during the graduation. What a rather childish statement from the scourge of drug dealers.

My understanding of it is that the lists of people in there are Wharton School alumni and included after the names of those graduates are the sectors they’re in as of 2014, not the courses.

            http://www.archives.upenn.edu/people/notables/political/pennworld.html

It contains the names, among others, of:

            – Solitas COLLAS-MONSOD
            – Gregory DOMINGO
            – Vincent PEREZ, Jr.
            – Raul S. ROCO
            – Manuel A. ROXAS II

The description on Manuel A. ROXAS II is as follows:

Born 1957; University of Pennsylvania, B.S. in Econ., 1979 (Bachelor of Science in Economics, Wharton School); Representative of the First District of Capiz to the Congress of the Philippines, 1993-1998; Secretary of Trade and Industry of the Philippines, 2001-present; living.

            • Wilfredo G. Villanueva says:

Oh, I get it. Duterte doesn’t really want to become president. His latest gaffe on Mar Roxas’s Wharton reputation proves it. He is just amusing himself and his horde. Actually, he is showing us how intellectually-inept (a.k.a. stupid) some of us are by looking at a human-rights violator as the country’s savior. Don’t you see the irony?

              • NHerrera says:

I too believe that Duterte does not really want to be President, especially now that he realizes several things:

                – at 70, he is not as young to tackle the job;
                – as a candidate now, subject to the Comelec certification of his CoC, he suddenly realizes in stark terms the enormity of the job, for which his oftentimes incredible unthinking remarks is no match; and thus he is not cut out for the job;
                – he is thus, as you said having a lot of fun on everybody.

The sad part or irony of it is that Pimentel and Cayetano — who thought they can gain politically from this — is instead losing from this, if not putting themselves part of the laughing stock. Sayang.

              • Joe America says:

I disagree. I think he wants to be president. I also think he is emotionally unbalanced, an outlyer to common civility. Now the question is: what should the honorable senators do, the ones who support him and who would foist this wreck of a man on the nation?

Senators Pimentel and Cayetano, who were like white knights in destroying Binay’s candidacy, have some explaining to do.

One is reminded of him making the foreigner eat a cigarette butt because he challenged Duterte’s authority.

One gains a better sense of the horror (for personal security) that would be the Philippines under a guy so emotionally unstable and indiscriminate.

I’m glad to hear this.

  10. Boy Lobo says:

This kind of condescending article is why Mar Roxas will not win.

    • I now know why I had the gut feeling it could sound condescending to some people… the present administration has improved the lives of many people… but in menial jobs. Even BPO is menial for the most part.. asenso ang hanap ng tao… alam ko iyan sa migrante.

If Mar Roxas can go ONE STEP FURTHER and show Edward and Kaycee’s maids how they can advance if they want to, sell K-12, K-12+ and more better, he can win… but only then.

      • Wilfredo G. Villanueva says:

You have to start somewhere. The country is “sira” for sure, so we start from the very bottom. It’s the conscience that’s speaking, not a person who can lecture Edward. Edward already knows the facts, he is just processing them in soliloquy, monologue or his own conscience speaking. Did I answer your question, Irineo?

        • Wilfredo G. Villanueva says:

Boy Lobo, same reply to your comment. Thanks!

        • His conscience speaking to him was the reason why I wrote you the article is OK… inspite of some strange gut feeling I had… pero hindi klaro kung gutom lang ako o pagod noon.

“That is the ask”.

          • But ALL ruling groups in the Philippines so far have been like that… basta tayo busog, kahit maghirap o magutom ang iba… Duterte’s people are even worse, basta tayo buhay, sila patay. Of course being an endo is better than what Edward had before… but that is something he can have as an OFW elsewhere… and remember the suspicion that Mar Roxas could be simply a modern haciendero… a lot of the press goes in that direction.

His actions show he wants more – PNP and LGUs mean he wants a safe country first, then a country well run nationwide… so he DOES think of his people… stereotypes are wrong. But who among his followers has understood that? I wonder even in his own circles.

Because the divide between educated and masa is like the old divide between house slaves and plantation slaves in the American South. The masters always won the game, now Mar has transcended the master-slave stuff, question is have Filipinos understood?

  11. Thea says:

    @Will Villanueva

Attended Ateneo de Naga? How you write reminds me the four pillars. Kudos! This will be understood by the grassroots easily.

  12. Bert says:

At VP?

    • Thea says:

Hello, Jenny. How are you? How do you feel? What is the problem with this blogger? What is he doing against you? or against your choice? Is there basis on your claim? What do you think is the solution? What are we going to do?

      • Wilfredo G. Villanueva says:

Hi Thea! Hi Jenny! Iyo, Jenny, Ateneo de Naga. Thanks. Alam mo yung salitang God bless you? Friends tayo. For the Philippines tayo palagi.

Diktador pa daw sya at NPA supporter.

      RORO tayo.

      • Very well said… the next step is to put together what Mar has done and how it has benefitted the country… his national government experience of so many years.

OK he has made mistakes… but he has shown how he learns from every mistake that is important, not like some people who make the same mistakes again and again.

The important thing is to balance mistakes vs. accomplishments… and to show that he dared move things in a country were very few things are moved.. because of inertia.

Mapanghusgang mundo ng internet. Hindi ako nagpapaka self righteous. Si Mar malamang hindi rin. Walang perpekto sa mundo. Tumingin tayo beyond the personality. Demokrasya ito and your vote is as good as mine. Research-research din pag may time.

(So far).

          Pagpapatuloy ng focus sa EDUKASYON:
-RA 7880 Roxas Law pantayang budget para sa mga state universities and colleges sa buong bansa
World standard ito.
          – 4Ps condional cash transfer program.

          Galawang EKONOMIYA/Poverty alleviation/Job opportunities
          – Karapatan Localized funding for 1490 municipalities. Makikinabang sa sektor ng agrikultura at pangingisda. Mar-Leni program din yan.
          – Bottom up budgeting pambili ng motorized bancas, gps fish finders, fishing nets
          – 6percent economic growth in the past 5 years na nakafocus sa “inclusive growth”, yan yung kasama ang mahihirap sa mga umuunlad
          – RA 8759 Public Employment Service Office sa bawat munisipyo. Bale laging may job fair
          – Micro, small and medium scale development and magna carta

KALUSUGAN AT HEALTH CARE ng Pilipino
          – Pinatibay na Philhealth
          – Cheaper medicine act
          – Drug prices regulation board

HUMAN RIGHTS and peace and order
          – pagpush ng decriminalization ng libel. Ok lang ang mapanghusgang mundo ng media. Hindi ka basta basta makakasuhan
          – human security act of 2007 naisabasura dahil nakokompromiso nito ang kalayaan ng bawat pilipino. Gusto mo ba makapkapan mg random? Gusto mo ba makulong dahil muka kang terorista?

          Maraming salamat.

Slogans and promises of all candidates is a clear proof of system failure in our electoral system. Exactly the same lines have been uttered by all presidentiables,( with the exception of a few) ever since the Philippines became a republic. “Halika! Do we really deserve to be treated as idiots or are we just calloused and accustomed to our present system that even newcomers like Grace Poe has no trouble adjusting to trapo mode. Even Duterte enjoys every scorn and mockery he throws at the voting population, media and all, WE deserve more than this. COMELEC should have upgraded the selection process so as to focus on specific issues and tangible solutions to actual social problems and governance, such as practiced by the US and formerly developing countries. Now, we are already left behind by our Asian neighbors because of our stupid politics. I do hope that the former Chief Justice Renato Puno succeeded in urging Congress to include the question on Charter Change in the upcoming election, because I believe this is what we need.

Kumbaga, two way street.

A corollary question: who is the Frankenstein who built or promoted this Uncontrollable Character offered to us in the guise of a savior or leader — Cayetano or Pimentel?

Ok, Mar lobbed a Davao myth statement. Duterte has to counter. Fine. It is called political tit for tat. Would it not have been a simple matter of asking Cayetano or Pimentel or his staff to do a due diligence, considering their cyber logistics, before opening his mouth about Roxas and his Wharton credentials? Something that can be verified? And boomerang if not true? Uncontrollable Character indeed.

  19. Wil,

I get the gist that it’s some sort of dialogue on the candidates, and from the photo, it’s the burger-flipper that’s the heart of this article.

Over here, the guy flipping burgers used to be teen-age kids or college kids, making ends meet. It’s not meant to be a career, just something to do for the summer or while in school, to make some extra cash— not meant to raise a family.

Lately, though over here, more and more people are working for McDonald’s or Wal-Mart, on minimum wage, and they are doing so in attempt to raise a family or with this notion that this work is a “career”. That’s pretty scary.

There’s legislation in the works now over here that will make community colleges (2 year colleges) FREE. But at the same time, the pattern now is to raise the minimum wage. The minimum wage was suppose to be the motivation (ie., this work sucks & the pay sucks) that gets these people into 2 year colleges.

So Wil, what other options, does this Edgar have? What programs, or legislations, are in place to remedy this? Can Bam Aquino’s Negosyo Centers play a role in Edgar’s life?

    • Wilfredo G. Villanueva says:

I may have hit upon a mother lode which can be dynamite to blow up in our faces, or gold for the campaign to capitalize on. I just wanted to say that malls house not only upstart businesses but also upstart Steve Jobses as well. There’s the move to end the contractualization law, which is good, although Mar has yet to dig into this. The K to 12 program is of course a PNoy legacy. Bam Aquino’s stoking of entrepreneurial fire is another, as you pointed out. Point being made is that diligent youths have an option vs. loitering in the kanto, prey to drug lords or petty crime. Not exactly a Band-Aid solution to unemployment, the tolerance for endos, given all of the above. Not sure if I answered your question well, Lance, considering my surprise for your consequent question.

      • “I just wanted to say that malls house not only upstart businesses but also upstart Steve Jobses as well.”

Ooppss. I think I completely missed the point of the article then, Wil. So it was more a commentary on Filipino bosses? If so, I just watched a really cool documentary last nite about Dean Kamen, http://www.slingshotdoc.com/ , not only about him but his Vapor Compression Distiller, https://vimeo.com/132461173

The Slingshot is simpler and more portable. All of these purifiers work by vapor compression distillation. Drug companies use the same method to purify water for use in medicines. The U.S. Navy has used the method to desalinate drinking water.
Drug company and submarine versions aren’t practical for developing countries, though. They’re too big to move and need technicians on call.

Dean Kamen once ran down a partial list of what this process can purify: the ocean; water laced with arsenic, poison, heavy metals, viruses and bacteria; liquid at a chemical waste site; or the contents of a latrine. Remarkably, all it takes is boiling and re-liquefying water at precise temperatures.

Dean Kamen is dyslexic, so never really was book smart, he instead did things with his hands. With so many Filipinos like Marius (our resident critical thinker), makers, people who makes things, get side-tracked, by pseudo-philosphers (or academics).

Are makers over there valued, and do they have support? For Steve Jobs it was his Dad, then his friend, Steve Woz.

        • Wilfredo G. Villanueva says:

Lance, Steve Jobs when he was starting, not when he was a boss. Edward, no matter his circumstances, had a vision for the future. “Magsumikap” is the grunt’s way of saying Semper Fi.

      • Dean Kamen came up with http://www.firstinspires.org/ after he realized American kids could name all sorts of Hollywood actors, celebrities and professional athletes, but can’t name any scientist or engineers, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=44dzZfP8-Mc

      • Thanks Will for also answering my question… the follow-up to your article in terms of the Mar campaign would be to show K-12, K-12+ – http://www.k-12plus.org/ – and what it is doing in pilot projects, to be rolled out nationwide at some point, to give industrial jobs to working-class young people, in German firms but not only, the Negosyo Center stuff… in reality Fast Forward the video shows aspects of all of that and is very cleverly made…

Now my analysis on Philippine society and candidates from my vantage point:

        masters: old elite
        house-slaves: office people
        plantation slaves: masa

modern Filipinos: increasing – it is a mindset not the present status

Mar Roxas comes from the masters, but is more modern than many think.
Many of his supporters are modern, but also slaves who have benefitted (palamunin)

Duterte also comes from the provincial masters, and wants to kill errant slaves.
Some modern supporters, but mostly palamunin and wannabe whip-crackers.

Binay is a former slave turned master who wants to steal and feed palamunin.

Poe is modern, under the control of a young master, with no real plan for change.

Miriam thinks she is modern, but has palamunin and wannabe whip-crackers on her side.

  22. Mami Kawada Lover says:

What I don’t understand is why there are Duterte supporters who resort to logical fallacies and ad hominems just because there are people who do not support their candidate. While supporters of other candidates are sometimes guilty of this too (notably supporters of Roxas, based on my experience), Duterte’s supporters are by far the most vocal and the most extreme. Earlier today I was pointing out to Leah Navarro on Twitter that some Duterte supporters are using logical fallacies, then later my timeline is filled with supporters calling me “tanga”, “bobo”, and other expletives. I don’t like Duterte and while I have occasionally said to myself that some Duterte supporters don’t know how to think (a statement which I now regret), I have never once called his supporters, whether in public or in private, “bobo”. The worst part was when I posted to them links from The Economist and BBC about the safest cities in the world, and noted the absence of Davao. Rather than reading the articles and replying to me in a calm manner, they instead attack me, calling me “tanga”, and asking me to read Numbeo which does list Davao. I then pointed out that Numbeo’s methodology is questionable, and then they attack me again. I then decided to keep quiet for sanity’s sake.

Then again, people like Carlos Celdran are also at fault for provoking the proverbial hornet’s nest. He didn’t have to call them Dutertards (I used to use that term but I stopped after realizing that going down to their level isn’t going to help either side). But sending him death threats just because he doesn’t like Duterte? Really?

    • I have directly called some Duterte supporters not bobo, but maiksi ang isip, meaning they have the brains but don’t think things to their logical conclusion. Some explain though – rehab is financed and tried first, recidivists are punished. A workaround, courts don’t work.

Well, Celdran always was a provocateur. But death threats are normal for many of them, Gab Valenciano also got them, I got them and responded by telling them my address is on my webpage, you can try. Total gun ban in Germany, strong police, and good instincts…

The tone of many Dutertistas shows what the country would become if he wins the race. Now as for the Roxas degree, I also had the impression he was an MBA. Of course the arguments of Dutertistas are just “pilosopo” meaning illogical nonsense, pseudo-logical.

But Roxas also did NOT state clearly what kind of degree he has on his webpage and so. Like someone I once knew who always wrote “product of UP” on her webpage, meaning she had two years but not graduated. With Wharton people think MBA most of the time.

Roxas was not clear about just having a Bachelor’s. Not wrong, just clever presentation. Well I finished UP. UP Elementary School in 1978. OK that would really be a little brazen. With Roxas it was just good Mar-keting. Duterte was too stupid to attack it in the right way.

      • Mami Kawada Lover says:

Well, at least now the issue can be settled. All Mar has to do is revise his profile and specify what he graduated from at Wharton. And if anything, he’s stil better than Bongbong who claimed to have graduated from Oxford even though he dropped out.

As for educational attainment, I for one don’t really care much about them. If you graduated from UP, then great, but that doesn’t mean that people who never finished college or even high school should be deprived of the right to lead or hold office. That’s discrimination. What I’m after is honestly of educational attainment, not necessarily attainment itself: I’d pick a candidate who is qualified and is honest about the fact that he only finished high school, than a candidate who is qualified but, while claiming to have finished an undergraduate course in UP and an MA in some foreign university, the truth is he faked those credentials.

        • Correct. It is not necessary to be highly educated. There are many educated idiots…

And Mar did not fake anything like Bongbong, so he is not Boy Recto like many say.

As for graduate/undergraduate, the poor understanding of English shows once more:

Graduate ibig sabihin iyong nakatapos. Nakatapos iyong may Bachelor.

That could be a template for arguing with people like that. Maybe even put a joke into it: Mar Roxas walang Masters, Bachelor lang. Until he married Korina. Naging Slave na siya.

        • Very well said…

….in Mar’s case, he has the experience, the right and true credentials, with no hint of corruption or human right issues, has executive and legislative experience. In his hands, all the programs and projects can be continued without interruption. Fast forward, continuity, enhance and expand them and minimize the perceived imperfections of the PNOY government. There is always room for improvement as nobody is perfect. Mar is da man. RORO!

      • I think it was Edgar who said Mar is honing the already sharp scalpel that is why he has been quiet for a while. Then some Duterte supporters are claiming Mar is just riding on Duterte’s “popularity”. I don’t know but it seems a stratagem by Mar, and it seems working. We’ll just have to confirm it with Giancarlo whether this one has translated into a lot of search hits for Mar. But the way the media has been in an uproar right now maybe something. Right, just let Duterte hit Mar real hard and like the way of the aikido make use of the force of the enemy and return it back to the enemy.

        • Aikido… most martial arts use some form of waiting for the first one to move… the first to move reveals his way of moving and the alert one who waits can find a weakness.

So Mar is more Japanese than we all think… maybe we should check his citizenship status.

          • “So Mar is more Japanese than we all think… maybe we should check his citizenship status.”

Speaking of citizenship… after chempo commented on the micromanaged aspect of the naturalization process, and how it’s done one a case by case basis (karl), I picked up a book titled SPQR (this is a very popular tattoo for those in the military here).

Do you think more naturalized Filipinos is the answer? ie. folks like Joe and Peter Wallace. There’s already the dual-citizen route, but I’m saying for those in the Philippines who are non-Filipinos to give them access to privileges in their adopted country—- sure vet for Korean/Japanese gangsters, saboteurs, etc. (just like the vetting over there),

But the point is to open up the Philippines to more ideas, more vigor, and more variety, following the premise of this book,

“Ancient Rome was an imposing city even by modern standards, a sprawling imperial metropolis of more than a million inhabitants, a “mixture of luxury and filth, liberty and exploitation, civic pride and murderous civil war” that served as the seat of power for an empire that spanned from Spain to Syria. Yet how did all this emerge from what was once an insignificant village in central Italy? In S.P.Q.R., world-renowned classicist Mary Beard narrates the unprecedented rise of a civilization that even two thousand years later still shapes many of our most fundamental assumptions about power, citizenship, responsibility, political violence, empire, luxury, and beauty.”

      • “…stupid to attack it in the right way.” Then Mar got him on this one…

Or Mar could have just said ” Slap me all you want if my Wharton degree is fake, but I am not gonna slap you if i am proven a Wharton Alumnus .. i’ll just pat your back and say – Nice try Digong, nice try – ” as what true gentleman would do. Just my two cents po.

  26. VSB says:

Depressingly poignant.. We really have to get the message out otherwise the thieves, buffoons and naïve puppets might prevail.. Mar needs a good PR job especially for the millions of Edwards out there doing their best to improve their lives..

  27. Mami Kawada Lover says:

So I told a Duterte supporter on Twitter that Mar did graduate from Wharton, and then he moves the goalposts claiming that “Wharton graduates only refer to MBA holders and not undergraduates”, claiming that Mar is an “undergraduate” and thus “did not graduate”. I then tod him the definition of an undergraduate, which means someone who is taking or took a bachelor’s degree, and then he says non sequiturs like “kakain si Mar ng bigas” (Mar is going to eat rice). When I showed him the GMA News link which stated that Wharton confirmed that Mar graduated from the school, the supporter simply told me something along the likes of “basta desperado na si Mar, Bye!” (Mar is Desperate).

I really hate to say this, but I’m becoming frustrated with the way of thinking that these vocal Duterte supporters have. They have many good points about Roxas and his incompetence, but the way they spew out non sequiturs and other fallacies, and even ignorance of the meaning of the term “undergraduate”, is disturbing.

    • Their makeup is similar to Neonazis or extreme violent leftists… these are probably people with a high degree of frustration, usually high testosterone that has nowhere to go, I once knew a violent rightist over here who had trouble finding girlfriends… so what drives them is archaic or primitive… when certain hormones flood the body the fight or flight response is activated… meaning the more modern parts of the brain no longer function… what comes are rationalizations driven by the reptilian and other simpler parts of the brain not logic.

These people usually calm down when they either learn martial arts or find a girlfriend… maybe they are on shabu or other strong drugs that make people agressive and illogical.

So you had the fight response first, then the flight response… let us ask LCPL_X about this.

      • Mami Kawada Lover says:

I can understand the fight or flight stance. I took some behavioral science subjects so I’m familiar with it. What I don’t understand is when these vocal Duterte supporters are given rebuttals of their argument, they then throw ad hominemns, expletives, non sequiturs, etc., instead of proper and logical rebuttals.

        • These are the foot soldiers… they are not very logical to begin with.

I have discussed with a possible ringleader… they are cold, logical and prepared in their aggression… very much like the group leaders (Gruppenführer) that Neonazis have.

          • Mami Kawada Lover says:

Honestly, I don’t know what’s worse/more disturbing: the irrational vocal Duterte supporters who throw ad hominems or immediately accuse anyone against them of being/coddling/supporting criminals or being paid lackeys of other candidates (Roxas in particular, for some reason), or the pro-Duterte accounts on Disqus/Facebook/etc. that seem to be fake (created within the last two months, have less than a hundred friends, post nothing but Duterte-related material, never reply to responses, etc.)

            • There are many ways to deal with that… I was once asked “kriminal ka ba?” for a strong anti-Duterte posting… I answered “ewan ko ba… itanong mo kay Digong baka alam niya.”

Or engage them in a Q&A dialog: he who asks questions leads the conversation… “bakit hindi puwedeng idaan sa husgado iyan?”… typical answer “corrupt kasi” or “mabagal”.. then ask whether they have heard of Justice on Wheels, and that corrupt officials are being dealt with by the Ombudsman… refer to the appropriate FB pages.. as for policing you will get the same kind of answers… refer to PNP FB page, refer to community-based policing they are building nationwide… inform, inform, inform… some will rethink some no.

              • Wilfredo G. Villanueva says:

Hmm. “Criminal ka ba?” Received same. Playbook. Behind the crass and hill billy veneer is a smooth PR conductor. Big money on the mayor.

          • Wilfredo G. Villanueva says:

Told you that your being in Deutschland is no accident. Keep pounding on Hitler-Duterte similarities.

      • “… let us ask LCPL_X about this.”

Yeah, the fighting and getting laid part will definitely calm people down. But what Mami encountered were most likely political trolls, paid or otherwise. Sure you can generalize and say all those who support Duterte are retards, or you can find cooler heads to talk to, or someone like Marius,

it all depends on what you’re trying to do, if you’re trying to simply campaign or if you’re studying the phenomenon.

But I think your initial take, Ireneo (from awhile back), that Duterte’s support will be based on ethno-linguistic and regional ties, was on point and that’s something you’ll have to examine closer— I don’t think the majority of Visayans and Mindanaoans will be online to debate folks like Mami.

At the end of the day people vote for those they feel affinity with, that’s the reason W. Bush was voted into office, Obama was simply a reaction to W. Bush policy (perceived cool head, but weak), so now it’s swinging towards Trump, ie. people have visceral reactions, especially when it comes to strength (why girls chase after bad boys).

I suspect Duterte’s supporters may not know fancy Latin words like ad hominem, or non sequitur, but what they’ll have is numbers. So my recommendation to Mami, is Schopenhauer’s stratagem 30, just focus on Duterte—- and if you know other Visayans or Mindanaoans against Duterte then appeal to them, use them as “authorities”, ie. see even this Visayan or this guy from Mindanaoa doesn’t think so.

Reason is over-rated. 😉 Know your audience. I’m a student of Wil here, he’s definitely onto something.

        • Mami Kawada Lover says:

Appeal to authority… That’s fallacious too, sadly.

          • yeah, in a logical world, Mami.

            • Also take note of Marius’ use of stratagem 4 (in the Critical Thinking thread),

              http://coolhaus.de/art-of-controversy/erist04.htm

If you want to draw a conclusion, you must not let it be foreseen, but you must get the premisses admitted one by one, unobserved, mingling them here and there in your talk: otherwise, your opponent will attempt all sorts of chicanery. Or, if it is doubtful whether your opponent will admit them, you must advance the premisses of these premisses; that is to say, you must draw up pro-syllogisms, and get the premisses of several of them admitted in no definite order. In this way you conceal your game until you have obtained all the admissions that are necessary, and so reach your goal by making a circuit. These rules are given by Aristotle in his Topica, bk. viii., c. 1. It is a trick which needs no illustration.

        • Mami Kawada Lover says:

I never implied that they were trolls, and I didn’t generalize, which is why I used the term “vocal Duterte supporters” rather than just “Duterte supporters”. I know and have talked to some Duterte supporters who are more calm and pragmatic. The problem is that not a few times I’ve talked to supporters who seem to either lack comprehension and logical skills or deliberately eschew them. Given Poe’s law, it’s hard to find out which ones are genuine (if misguided) and which ones are trolls, but giving the benefit of the doubt I believe that most of these vocal ones are genuine supporters, just misguided by their intense support of their candidate. It’s a phenomenon which is not unique to Duterte (I have seen similar attitudes with a number of Roxas supporters), but in Duterte’s case the effects are far more dangerous.

As for Visayas and Mindanao, I don’t know. I can see the Visayan vote being split between Roxas and Santiago, while Mindanao is allegedly Binay’s bailiwick, and also Poe’s should she go through.

Also, numbers. I’m not sure if I told you this yet, but when I told two Duterte supporters who were attacking me that Numbeo is unreliable and Davao is nowhere to be seen in more credible “safest cities” lists such as the one by The Economist, the two actually cursed and attack me more, even calling me “tanga”.

  28. If one watches the Mar interview on CNN Philippines, one can see in the nuances how he handles the slapping controversy… not at all weak like it would seem at first.

He has a certain presence live and in interviews… that reports don’t accurately convey.

    • Joe America says:

Bingo. And I think that running for president has brought him out of his “shell” formed by working diligently and not making waves. As he is forced to respond . . . perhaps it is the other candidates who had better beware that they are forcing his strengths into the limelight by giving him a reason to strike back. They are giving him what he has not been able to construct for himself: a platform broadly recognized as “macho” . . . and honorable.

  29. BFD says:

If we’re talking about Mar reaching as many people as they can, I suggest that they go to the palengke and hold a town hall meeting there where Mar can hear the nitty gritty situation that that particular place is encountering. Since we live in a digital world, it can be translated a million times and its impact would be felt immensely.

Mar, come to the palengke and other common places where common people hold their talks and hold your meeting there. You will connect more with them and it’s going to impact more.

Be Mr. Palengke once more. Not the CNN town hall meeting, its area of coverage is international. Your audience is local, so go local. Use your common sense and go down to basics, man.

Learn what Absalom did with the people of Israel when he wrested control against his father David, he went straight to the people and made his name known by giving sound advice or solving the problem of the common people.

Joe, re your Notes from the Editor and the Presidential Candidates list, including the ones in parenthesis, yesterday I was listening to the comments of two supposed Political Analysts from DLSU and UP. Probably, having to respond to the Teleradyo interview, without much thought, the two gave similar “loose” response.

Essentially they said that if Poe and Duterte were out of the ballot, their votes will not go to Mar because of the supposed suspicion that the Admin was a wrecking crew on them. So, what does that mean? All are unthinking voters, even the poor. And they will split their votes only to Santiago and Binay? The numbers man in me reacted and say that is not correct. I did not do the numbers yesterday, and will do so only now. If I am able to do so within an hour, I will post it after this. It will not be appropriate in your new blog topic of banking.

A Genie comes out and says since you are three, each of you has one wish.

The American wishes for a house on Long Beach, enough money and health.

The Frenchman wishes for the same, only somewhere on the Cote D’Azur.

The Russian wishes for his neighbor’s cow to die because he has one more.

    • NHerrera says:

      Here goes.

I used the good old Excel for convenience although any old calculator will do, and came out with the following, with assistance of My Magician friend after the immediate preparatory notes:

      1. Put Santiago, Binay, Roxas base support numbers at 10, 20, 15, respectively with the difference 55, the total share of Duterte and Poe, say, split 30 and 25, respectively (which are lost to them if both CoC’s are cancelled).

      2. Rather than distribute 30 and 25 outright to the three remaining, the Magician goes through the more brain-helpful percent distribution of 50, 20, 30 from Dut and percent distribution 30, 20, 50 from Poe to the three — S, B and R. Multiplication of these into 30 and 25 and added to the base numbers give

      3. The following table:

      Pres Candidate—-Santiago— Binay—Roxas

      Base support——–10———-20———15
      From Duterte——–15———-6———–9
      From Poe————-7.5———5———-12.5

      TOTAL—————32.50—–31.00——36.50

The ranking (NOT the absolute numbers) is rather ROBUST to reasonable changes in the assumptions — of course, using numbers such as your bookie Sal may use.

Joe, can you check if your bookie Sal thinks his Magician friend did not over-indulge on San Mig. He may have more than the usual since he sat with a plateful of Cicharon Bulaklak munching it in this stormy weather. I told him to go easy on the CB, but he is hard-headed when it comes to San Mig and CB. Otherwise he is OK as Sal knows.

      • Joe America says:

Sal’s in Macau and has his phone off. Must have found a companion . . . He has the utmost confidence in you and your team, I know. I think the calculations make good sense, better than those other “experts” for sure.

    • “Admin was a wrecking crew on them”

This is what Poe, Binay and Duterte and their enablers and supporters are accusing PNOY and Mar of doing to them.

What, Tatad is now part of the Admin? Hello!

Is making sure that the Constitution and the law are properly implemented now demolition, wrecking them? Poe goes further by saying ti will not feel good if Mar wins by default if the DQ cases succeeded in preventing her candidacy, or words to that effect. And she is praying that Duterte will not be disqualified, am obvious attempt to win his supporters in case the substitution process will not prosper and he got disqualified.

Binay has been accusing the admin of this – now where is Pimentel and Cayetano, aren’t they with Duterte? Although I am so disappointed with these two who ignored their oaths to protect the law and the constitution, I am appreciative of their works in exposing Binay for the plunderer and manipulator that he is.

    • Joe America says:

I’d think the votes will go every which way. I don’t think Poe’s would go in large percentage to Binay. It seems to be a “high principled” following, in the main. Duterte’s might go to Binay. Santiago would for sure pick up a bunch. I’d hope that the followers of both would soon come to realize their perception of Roxas is based on tabloid fluff and political misrepresentation from opponents.

      • NHerrera says:

Correct. Can’t put too much on this numbers game. But it pays to put some notional numbers into concepts like “high principled” following in the main versus the other kind. So we will see with four months to go whether there is a big learning thing here for the voters “in the main.”
