“Tulong, Panginoon!” [Mula sa: cryingoutforjustice.com]

w

Una, ang matibay na pwesto sa mga survey, eh, ang isang taong hitik na hitik sa mga allegations ng pandarambong. Dati kasi, nakitaan lang daw ng isang ginintuang arinola—isang paninira lang at walang katotohanan—si Presidente Elpidio Quirino, eh, sapat na yun para hindi siya manalo sa re-eleksiyon laban kay Ramon Magsaysay. Ganun katindi ang pagkasuklam ng tao sa korapsyon. Noon yun. Ngayon, tila yata baligtad na ang mundo, mas korap, mas kinagigiliwan ng tao;

Pangalawa, anong kabalbalan ito? Ginawa ni Francis Tolentino at Duterte, yung magpakita ng kalaswaan ng Play Girls at manghila ng babae’t lapirutin sa harap ng madla, maraming nasuklam, akala natin, ‘di na mauulit, ngunit mali tayo. Inulit ni Jonvic Remulla. Kinarga pa, ginawang parang sex toy ang babae na pakiwara ko, eh, nagtititili sa tuwa’t galak. Nasaan na ang dalagang Pilipina na mahinhin at mayumi? At nasaan na ang lalakeng Pilipino na inilalagay sa pedestal ang kababaihan? Tila yata baligtad na ang mundo, mas bastos, mas kerengkeng, mas katawa-tawa’t kinagigiliwan ng tao;

Pangatlo, ang kagilagilalas na si Leni Robredo, na-traffic na sa pangalawa-pangatlo sa mga survey. Kailangan pa bang pag-isipan yun? Abogada na nag serve sa mahihirap. Economist na nag-aral sa UP Diliman. Ina ng tahanan. The other half of the Robredo miracle in public service. Tinatalo ni Bongbong? ‘Di maabutan si Chiz Escudero na makata ang pananalita pero trapong-trapo sa isip at gawa? Tila yata baligtad ang mundo, mas magaling magneobra ng tao, mas magaling magbalasa ng prinsipyo, mas kinagigiliwan ng tao;

Pang-apat, hirap din si Mar. Malagihay ang boses niya sa mga infomercials niya, parang statesman ang dating, pero mabagal ang usad. Tingnan natin kung makatutulong ang endorsement ni Guia Gomez, na hindi raw pinababayaan ni Mar ang San Juan kapag may kalamidad. Kausap ko nga ang isang taxi driver noong isang araw. Mabait siya, kapwa kasi kami Bicolano, pero kinakampanya, ulit, kinakampanya raw niya sa mga kaibigan at kamag-anak niya na huwag iboto si Mar. Kahit daw kasi local government ang may kasalanan kung bakit nabulok ang mga bigas na dapat daw sana ay para sa mga nasalanta sa Tacloban, eh, si Mar pa rin daw ang may kasalanan. Basta daw. Tila yata baligtad ang mundo, mas matindi pa ang kakulangan sa tao, gaya ng pagnakaw, pag-misrepresent at mambastos sa mga institusyon ng bayan, eh, mas kinagigiliwan ng tao, at;

Ambush daw, hindi naman;

Maka-people power daw, hindi naman;

Maka-Diyos daw, hindi naman kasi nga may chika-babes;

Isa, buhay na buhay ang mga tao sa social media laban sa kasamaan. Sa aking small circle of friends, maraming dati ay tahimik lang, eh, nangangalit na rin sa mga gawaing Binay, Poe at Duterte. Paisa-isa nga lang, pero dati kasi zero, ngayon namumulaklak at namumunga na. At maraming consistent sa paglaban, mga keyboard warriors, sila Cynthia Patag, Mary Grace Gonzales, Ramon Bautista, Jim Paredes, Leah Navarro, Irineo Salazar, ang Netcab (Netizens Coalition Against Binay), at marami pang iba. May good news nga ako. Ang isang kaibigan ko na anti-PNoy ang pakiwari ko, ‘lam nyo ba, sa huling pagkikita naman, eh, PNoy, Ro-Ro daw siya? Epekto ito ng walang humpay na paglaban ng mabubuting tao sa mga troll, walang magawa, basta galit lang sa yellowtards daw. Malakas ang kabila, pero determinado rin ang mga keyboard warriors na patumbahin ang consciousness na wala na tayong magagawa diyan, mananalo talaga ang kadiliman, itiklop na natin ang dilaw na tabing;

Tila pinagsamang Magsaysay at Cory.

Crisp but meaningful assessment to my great liking. It will be nice to have a Pilipino translation but perhaps not a transliteration or faithful translation but done in a manner that will be appreciated by the mass of Filipinos who I believe hunger for information and truth from the forest of untruths or deception. As before I cannot volunteer for lack of capability. Thanks for the article.

    Will,

Somehow I feel good today, a Sunday — a day when Biblical passages are read and pondered on (my wife and I are Catholics) — about the prospects of the National Election in May. I can’t explain it. Your article, using words from @Annalissa M. valdez adds to the sunshine of my feelings. Thanks.

Inshallah my ass!

You can’t get more establishment than that. In the eyes of the “masa” who constitute majority of voters, our political and economic establishment has failed, impoverished, and alienated them many times over.

We are seeing a pattern here. The more un-establishment you are, or at least pretend to be one, the better are your chances of getting elected president.

        • If Poe is green, so is Leni..she is good where she is right now, to acquire more experience under Mar’s tutelage. Mar has been proven to be an able, experienced and qualified public servant. Perception is the problem, enhanced by his opponents. Remember, he has topped one senatorial election before. If we his supporters are mouthing what his opponents are saying against him, how can we help him, we are the ones undermining his candidacy if we continue like this.

        • PML says:

It’s not Mar’s salability, it’s the herd mentality and the immaturity of the electorate that bothers me.

          • Micha says:

It is not by accident that the electorate are immature and ignorant. They were made poor, immature and ignorant by design because that’s the only way that our political and economic establishment can maintain control, power, and privilege.

            • PML says:

“It is not by accident that the electorate are immature and ignorant.”

And they chose to remain poor, immature, and ignorant.
I was born with a disability, I don’t blame my mother.
I only have two options, self-pity and believe that some divine entity has a plan for me… or do something about my disability and help myself.

We have a responsibility to our countrymen, hindi ako makakapayag na sabihin sa akin “hanggang ganyan nalang” ang mga kababayan natin “by design”.

It’s our duty to educate and inform them. Sabi nga ng ABBA “There’s no regret. If I had to do the same again I would, my friend,….. ”
              🙂

                “Fernando”

Can you hear the drums Fernando?
I remember long ago another starry night like this
                In the firelight Fernando
You were humming to yourself and softly strumming your guitar
I could hear the distant drums
And sounds of bugle calls were coming from afar

                They were closer now Fernando
Every hour every minute seemed to last eternally
                I was so afraid Fernando
We were young and full of life and none of us prepared to die
And I’m not ashamed to say
The roar of guns and cannons almost made me cry

There was something in the air that night
                The stars were bright, Fernando
They were shining there for you and me
                For liberty, Fernando
Though we never thought that we could lose
                There’s no regret
If I had to do the same again
                I would, my friend, Fernando

Now we’re old and grey Fernando
And since many years I haven’t seen a rifle in your hand
Can you hear the drums Fernando?
Do you still recall the fateful night we crossed the Rio Grande?
I can see it in your eyes
How proud you were to fight for freedom in this land

There was something in the air that night
                The stars were bright, Fernando

Though we never thought that we could lose

If I had to do the same again

You will not believe it, but on coming back and reading this thread, I was greatly amazed at the coincidence. Before I read your “Fernando” post, I just played the ABBA Album, and of course did not close the Album until I played my two favorites in that Album — Fernando and Chiquita. I cannot decide which one is really my top favorite of the two. There is the lyrics and the lively, bouncy tune of Chiquita. But there is the haunting tune and the lyrics of Fernando — lyrics which speak of fighting the good fight and doing it over again, even if they lost the fight. Hooray for ABBA. And hooray for you both — PML, Mary.

This is not exaggeration – with Pnoy and Mar succeeding terms, they will continue the fight of their respective fathers, Ninoy and Gerry, who bought fought the dictatorship. This time democracy is being threatened again, with Marcos, Duterte and the remnants of that hated regime openly trying to get to Malacanang again. The Mafia members are surrounding Poe, Binay, Duterte and Marcos as they all long for happy days to be here again.

And we will say NEVER AGAIN!!!

              • If a disabled guy like PML is willing to be counted in this fight, if the aging democracy fighters are still at it, I hope the young generation will not disappoint. Millennials, this is it, we are not that strong anymore, the most we can do is to be keyboard warriors and offer encouragement, the fate of the nation is in your hands, do we step back of go forward.

Even Duterte admits that traffic cannot be solved in just a six-year term. I will add the infrastructure projects already in the drawing board, the continuing fight against corruption and impunity, the fight against dynasty and poverty. He is thinking of a 12-year term (dictatorship?) And we are advocating for continuity.

                RORO!

              • awwss… that should be “do we step back or go forward?”

            • Micha says:

Tumpak ka dyan. All politics is local. Ang problema, this election is a referendum on President Aquino, and it seems the admin is not making a bold and aggressive case for their agenda, whatever that is, into which majority of the voters can accept and/or relate.

              • http://www.sunstar.com.ph/davao/opinion/2016/01/23/maglana-what-it-mean-453282 – I tend to agree with the analysis of Mindanao historian Dr. Macario Tiu on … a “malformed Hispano-American state creature with a malformed state culture that is essentially anti-Filipino, anti-Filipino nationalist, and anti-people, and anti-poor”. – it is similar to what I wrote in my first article here: https://joeam.com/2015/02/26/when-will-the-philippines-reach-a-tipping-point/Getting its act together depends not only on institutions – which are like the operating systems of computers. It also depends on a culture that supports those institutions and is compatible with them – something like the BIOS of a computer. Philippine culture could become strong to support the institutions and secure the future of the nation if the tipping point is reached. – I am very surprised but maybe should not be that Dr. Tiu, whom I read about just today, used a similar analogy: In his essay, Dr. Tiu expressed disagreement with an earlier analysis that the Philippine has the right “hardware” and that only the “software” was needed for the country to overcome its kulelat status and become more developed. Pushing the metaphor, he cautioned that computer hardware could only be upgraded to a particular extent before it becomes outmoded.

Now the hope is that Mar Roxas can convince the people that reforms will touch the root cause of many issues, like Rizal already mentioned in “The Philippines, A Century Hence” – I posted some stuff about that in the previous article… Sancho Panza and the doctor.

Alexander Katigbak: Opinion after opinions of lawyers differs in many aspects,we have several thousands lawyer and attorney in the list, and since the case of grace poe in now in the hands of SC justices, why can’t we just wait and abide the ruling of the most superior court of the land.

Mary Grace P. Gonzales: You know, you are so right, Alexander Katigbak. But then, I for one, would like to understand the whys, the hows and the whats… because by understanding, I can make an informed decision, plus, if anyone asks me, I can reply and quote the constitution, the law, procedures and jurisprudence. Also, the Supreme Court has been known to err in their rulings, right? Look at their decision to free Enrile on bail for humanitarian reasons – health, old age, frailty , but look where he is now, thumbing his nose at the gullible SC justices… laughing his way to the Senate august chamber and raising the hand of BBM when he declared his VP candidacy. Another one, their ruling that the midnight appointments of GMA are constitutional – aaarrrghhh! Another one – ruling that Estrada can run in any government position again despite having been convicted of plunder…and there many more….Just sayin’

If the SC rules for Poe, then so be it, she stays as candidate and can possibly win or go back to the Senate if she loses, if they rule otherwise on both the citizenship and residency issues, she will return to private life as she is DQ’d as Presidential candidate and can’t go back to being Senator….But if I understand the issues, I get to decide based on that understanding, for as I already explained above, the SC decisions, like in the Legislative bodies, are based on a numbers game – majority rules.

              • Jurisprudence is how the law is interpreted to clarify what principles are binding for all…

Seems Philippine jurisprudence is based less on principles than on politics, so the question is whether it shall really develop into a clear body of more predictable rules…

If one looks at German constitutional jurisprudence there is a clear development: https://www.dukeupress.edu/The-Constitutional-Jurisprudence-of-the-Federal-Republic-of-Germany/

Compared to previous editions of The Constitutional Jurisprudence of the Federal Republic of Germany, this third edition more closely tracks Germany’s Basic Law and, therefore, the systematic approach reflected in the most-respected German constitutional law commentaries. Entirely new chapters address the relationship between German law and European and international law; social and economic rights, including the property and occupational rights cases that have emerged from Reunification; jurisprudence related to issues of equality, particularly gender equality; and the tension between Germany’s counterterrorism efforts and its constitutional guarantees of liberty. Kommers and Miller have also updated existing chapters to address recent decisions involving human rights, federalism, European integration, and religious liberty.

I have searched for something similar related to Philippine jurisprudence, all I find is the Chan Robles database of Supreme Court decisions. What I suspect is that there is no real principle behind anything, just decisions tailored to suit political cases – very unpredictable.

What may be legitimate is to modernize the way of interpreting the law if it is no longer in line with the development of values… but that must be done carefully and consistently – any Supreme Court must be a beacon of values and principles, not a political place.

The word macaronic comes from the New Latin macaronicus which is from the Italian maccarone (“dumpling”, regarded as coarse peasant fare). The term can have derogatory overtones, and is usually reserved for works where the mixing of languages has a humorous or satirical intent or effect. *******
    1. May Diyos naman.

    2. Siya nga ba?

    3. I will begin with the statement, for simplicity’s sake, that there are four main streams in monotheistic thought: theism, Daoism, pantheism and non-theism.

o Theism is the belief in a God who created and governs the universe. This is the Abrahamic religions.
o Daoism is the belief in a God who created the universe but does not interfere with it. This is Taoism.
o Pantheism is the belief that the universe is equivalent to God. This is Spinoza’s God.
o Non-theism is the belief that there is no God. This is Buddhism.

    4. The belief of “may Diyos naman” is theistic. It posits that all things will be well because God exists. Not only exists but actively intervenes in the fate of man and the universe.

4.1. The best argument against an interventionist God is the problem of evil (and suffering). It goes, “If God is the author of Good, is he not then also the author of Evil?” There are Bible verses that support and do not support the contention.

4.2. Will’s answer to the problem is faith: “‘Di niya pababayaan ang mababait na tao.”

    5. The trouble with this answer, or any answer, is the overwhelming evidence to the contrary. Will has cited some. Let me add just one more instance: we have all seen the aftermath of typhoon Yolanda. After so much death, to paraphrase Dylan Thomas, there need not be any other.

    6. Because of the problem of evil, I lean towards Daoism. Because of the problem of religious exclusivity, I lean towards pantheism. Because of the problem that faith suffices, which is the problem of ignorance, I lean towards Buddhism.

    7. In some other post, Josephivo recently posited that the purpose of life is happiness. This postulate accords with the Dalai Lama, who has a book entitled, “The Art of Happiness.”

7.1. From the Wikipedia article on the book: “The concepts that the purpose of life is happiness, that happiness is determined more by the state of one’s mind than by one’s external conditions, circumstances, or events—at least once one’s basic survival needs are met and that happiness can be achieved through the systematic training of our hearts and minds.”

7.2. More specifically, I have come to refine the postulate: the purpose of life is to learn (or to become enlightened). This is still in accord with Buddhism.

7.3. But this is very easy for me to say because my “basic survival needs are met.”

    8. After all of the above doubts and rambling, there is a little niggle in my mind: Could it be that God is working through us in The Society?

8.1. But, no. This is, of course, arrogance.

    9. Going back to the application of an interventionist God to politics, Micha’s comment is relevant: “Wag nating sisihin ang Diyos kung apat na buwan magmula ngayon, deklaradong talo na si Mar sa laban.” After all, God “allowed (or approved or instigated)” Marcos to happen.

    10. Chivas’ comment is also relevant: in each of us are the seeds (or wolves) for good or evil. What grows depends on what seeds we water (or feed).

    10. For me, the inevitable conclusion is: we are collectively and individually responsible. It is a matter of choice… entirely in our hands.

10.1. If God exists, it is better for us to use our minds and hearts to the best of our abilities without having to rely on Him at all.

10.2. If God does not exist, we have no choice.

    • Edgar Lores and Yolanda… Voltaire and the Great Lisbon Earthquake… same conclusions: http://blogs.britannica.com/2010/01/the-haiti-and-lisbon-earthquakes-why-god/

Prior to Lisbon, one of the greatest works on theodicy had been written by Gottfried Leibniz. In a wide-ranging book on the subject, Leibniz posited a theory that, as it has so often been boiled down, we live in the best of all possible worlds. Every horror that befalls us is part of a larger plan for our own good. After Lisbon, the great Enlightenment writer Voltaire took Leibniz to task in one of history’s most searing and memorable short novels, Candide. Leibniz was a genius, but Candide forever dented the great thinker’s reputation by making a mockery of his theodicy. We do not live in the best of all possible worlds, Voltaire made clear. Instead, evil and suffering run rampant through our world, a fact we ignore at our own peril. – Edgar, care to wear a powdered wig?

          • sonny says:

“Irineo sans secular background reminds me St Thomas Aquinas …”
St Thomas Aquinas, a Dominican priest of the early 13th century had the most prodigious memory that I know of. One biographer has even claimed that Aquinas committed the WHOLE Bible to memory. All this prowess he employed to the service of the philosophy and theology of the Catholic Church. Hence he is known to the Church as the Angelic Doctor. One of two premier theology schools of Rome is the Angelicum named after St Thomas title.

“Karl would be, at some other time, the closest confidante of Venerable Bede …”
Venerable Bede was a Benedictine monk of the 7th century is one of the founders of English civilization (my claim). He was a polymath and is also known as the father of English History.

    • josephivo says:

Under 7, as you mentioned me:

Projecting a 3 dimensional surface as the globe on a 2 dimensional map always induces errors (unless it is about an infinitesimal small surface.) The dimensions will be wrong or the angles or the surface area or any combination of them. Equally so, I belief that projecting divine thoughts into human ones will always be wrong. Trying to capture them completely with our limited language is preposterous. In Edgar’s Pantheism model it is projecting the 10 dimensions of the universe into the 4 dimensions we know.

But even so, it is impossible for me to believe that the purpose of creation is the unhappiness of human beings. So whatever belief we have, we are condemned to try to be happy, as individuals and as society. Even more, we have to search for a double happiness: the on the spot happy experiences and the satisfying reflection on what we achieved. (Just avoidance of pain as in a Buddhist’s nirvana seems too narrow for me)

Happiness as enjoying a good meal, a good conversation, a mind blowing sunset. Recognizing the feel good value is more important than knowing who was the cook, what the catch phrases were, who created the dust particles and moisture as the source of the colorful sunset, if it was by someone or through someone. Happiness as seeing healthy, independent and well balanced children, a good degree or a successful career we got, a contribution to the election of the best presidential candidate. What counts is knowing what we did to achieve it and even more seeing it confirmed by others.

      • edgar lores says:

But Google translates the title of this article ” May Diyos Naman ” as “May ‘God’ Again”. And some of the comments are in English and clearly they are also reflecting on the presence or maybe the absence of “god’ in the world. And there is Edgar’s comment which I appreciate so much

This is a topic/issue close to my own heart…In my youth I was compulsorily indoctrinated with the dogma, teachings & rules of the Catholic church – in it’s Irish manifestation rather than Hispanic Filipino. ( I suspect that emotionally they are hugely different ) .

In my early 20’s I abandoned that religion and sought information & insights elsewhere. I still do now. And from that journey have come also to think that the word ‘God” is a misnomer and promotes a limited and thus distorted conception of the Divine..

There is much good in Buddhism for it places the responsibility for our own actions & our happiness on ourselves. Doaism also offers much good for it seems the Divine in the world if only we look.

For the Divine is present in the world all the time. But present in our lives only when invited. Then we are indeed connected and in a state of grace. But if we choose not to invite the Divine into our lives we can then do evil & seek ‘happiness’ in dominating, controlling and harming others.

And somehow that seems very relevant to the future of the Filipino people.

I worry about balance is all. Foreigners here tend to gather in their own watering holes and share wisdom, too often a wisdom with condescension attached. Irineo arrived here with a little of that attitude, but kept his mind open and has listened and read and learned and become one of the best, most objective observers of the nation’s affairs and eccentricities there is. The best way to join the discussion is with the attitude of a student rather than a teacher Your forthcoming blog is perfect, in that vein. I learned much from it as you related what you learned, and I’m looking forward to the discussion on it when it is published. The challenge for the blog is how to be an authentic part of the Philippine scene, not a removed and judgmental body pretending simple answers to a very complex – and rich – nation’s challenges.

Your descriptions also apply to Catholicism. If you were a Catholic before, you can have a look-see again and see if it fits already. Catholicism has veered away from rules and procedures towards spirituality and sharing with others the good news of a Lord that has given much to save the whole of humanity, but always with the free will of those to be saved. • God, in His Mighty Wisdom has given us the option to exercise our free will. It is up to us to listen to His Word (Bible) bearing in mind that any decisions we make has consequence – good or bad. We cannot attribute to God the consequence of our wrong choices in life. The masa voted for Estrada and in his 2 years he was able to put himself in the top ten list of The World’s most Corrupt Leaders. He was convicted for plunder by a credible court. Ditto with Arroyo, we had to live with the consequence of those who manipulated the votes, remember Garci?

To the rest of our countrymen – This is a very important decision that we will all be making in May. Do we move forward or do we go back to uncertainty, to the dark days of impunity and corruption?

That’s why, I will not be entertaining doubts or discouragement. This is a fight between right and wrong, good and evil, corruption and honest governance, sovereignty and surrender, prosperity and poverty.

I will not surrender for the fight is still beginning. We will do our utmost best. And by faith, God will do the rest. We will win.

        • Bert says:

No need to ask ng pasensya. Tumingin tayo beyond the personality. Demokrasya ito and your vote is as good as mine. Research-research din pag may time.

(So far).

            Pagpapatuloy ng focus sa EDUKASYON:
-RA 7880 Roxas Law pantayang budget para sa mga state universities and colleges sa buong bansa
World standard ito.
            – 4Ps conditional cash transfer program.

            Galawang EKONOMIYA/Poverty alleviation/Job opportunities
            – Karapatan Localized funding for 1490 municipalities. Makikinabang sa sektor ng agrikultura at pangingisda. Mar-Leni program din yan.
            – Bottom up budgeting pambili ng motorized bancas, gps fish finders, fishing nets
            – 6percent economic growth in the past 5 years na nakafocus sa “inclusive growth”, yan yung kasama ang mahihirap sa mga umuunlad
            – RA 8759 Public Employment Service Office sa bawat munisipyo. Bale laging may job fair
            – Micro, small and medium scale development and magna carta

KALUSUGAN AT HEALTH CARE ng Pilipino
            – Pinatibay na Philhealth
            – Cheaper medicine act
            – Drug prices regulation board

HUMAN RIGHTS and peace and order
            – pagpush ng decriminalization ng libel. Ok lang ang mapanghusgang mundo ng media. Hindi ka basta basta makakasuhan
            – human security act of 2007 naisabasura dahil nakokompromiso nito ang kalayaan ng bawat pilipino. Gusto mo ba makapkapan mg random? Gusto mo ba makulong dahil muka kang terorista?

            Maraming salamat.

      Will,

I already posted my thanks for and appreciation of your current blog above, but permit me to post additional comments or trivia:

      1. I share your comment immediately above. But I confess to enjoying the discussions on the different sides of this multi-dimension fence that touches on god, religion, logic. I am one of those — like you, I believe — who is not averse to reading non-prescribed materials related to our faith, whatever that may be. In fact it strengthens or makes it evolve — that is funny huh, an “evolving faith.” I also confess to not engage in related debates, except with my wife and children but rarely.

      2. I TRY to use mensa-ic thoughts and discuss this with others when divorced from the current main subject.

      3. On my faith, I have kinship with some of the liberal-minded Jesuits and I am glad we have the present Pope — he is closer to my type of Pope. Before him many of my inner thoughts about my faith would have been heresy — that is, surely “off with my head” during the Inquisition Period.

      4. On logic even in this, it is not as simple as Logic 101; there are variations. Indeed the human brain is wondrous in the sense of what it can come out with — thoughts that bring forth f = ma in Newton and e=mc^2 in Einstein; and of course the profound thoughts of the Philosophers, no less wondrous.

      5. My current thoughts also come with age — perhaps subconsciously to keep my BP at a normal level for my age, hahaha.

      Bert,

He he. Strictly speaking, your conclusion does not follow from my premise.

My premise is that we should do our best regardless, right?

Applying that premise to God, He should do His best without relying on us — for amusement, adoration or anything.

Do you think that mankind is the best of His creation? I would not think so. It is true mankind has produced extraordinary outliers — Jesus, Buddha, Newton, Einstein, Shakespeare, Rumi, Bach, Beethoven, Chopin — but, on the whole, mankind has been in strife forever.

From this, one can imagine many scenarios. I will cite two:

      1. There are intelligent beings greater than mankind and they may inhabit other worlds and/or other dimensions.

      2. There is a hierarchy of gods as there is a hierarchy of beings, and our Creator is a middling God.

But granting your logic and assuming God created us for His amusement, what kind of entertainment do you think would amuse Him most as He munches on popcorn?

For myself, I would imagine He would enjoy the best culture and arts that the brightest of us pursue — fine music, fine literature, fine dance, fine paintings, and fine food. Sports? I don’t know, although I follow tennis myself. Movies? That would be a kind of reverse “Inception:” instead of a dream within a dream that seems to be reality, it would be a reality within a reality into a deeper state of reality that seems to be a dream.

      • Bert says:

Ah, Edgar, you’re assuming of course that God is a forthright God, to be so amused solely by such good things people do in their lives such as fine music, fine literature, fine dance, etc., For sure what God did to the people in Sodom and Gomorrah was not comparable to those fine things you mentioned and I don’t know if God was amused doing what He did there, but strictly assuming that creation was for God’s amusement, then surely God can be sadistic as well.

You asked what I think would amuse God most. Well, for one, God I think would be laughing with vigorous hilarity reading this political blog of Wilfredo and reading the commentaries herein while munching on His popcorn, :).

  21. Caliphman says:

Attorney Oscar Tan entitled his current column with the same title as the poem below. I was dismayed and confused with his review of the oral arguments in the Poe SC case. Usually cyrstal clear and quite lucid when explaining why Poe had a good if not winning legal case, he was rambling and despondent about Poe’s prospects for avoiding a disqualification decision from the High Court. I was hoping for a review of the key issues raised by the justices and how he would have rebutted them more successfully than Poe’s chief counsel, Atty. Poblador, who quite frankly underwhelmed me. I would not say as Tan did that Poblador was sidetracked and the interpellation did not address the key issues of the case. The head counsel was partly responsible for this by bringing up procedural flaws by the Comelec in starting off his presentation as Tan mentions. Still, the arguments covered the issue of presumption which relates not only to the question of how Poe as a foundling can be considered an NBFC and which leads to that of who should have the burden of proof in complaining that she is not. Panganiban,Tan,Poblador and others maintain the central point that the text of the constitution is silent as it relates to this two and other significant questions.
Poblador did take a drubbing from the justices in failing to rebut their points which attacked his positions on these questions.

Tan did nor say so but he seems pretty close to throwing in the towel. Tragic.

    Sisyphus Lament

Heavy’s the weight of the boulder uphill,
    Rolling and rolling and rolling up still;
Tired are my bones and my flesh.
Erinnyes’ whip, with a furious crack,
Attacks my skin, tears the flesh off my back,
No hope for me to refresh.

Endless is my labour and pain uphill,
Rolling and rolling and rolling up still,
    Labouring through day and night.
Having cheated death I’m punished to live,
Blood and sweat to the thirsty soil to give,
There’s never an end in sight.

Is there some hope to end the heavy toil,
Heal the bleeding wounds with cool soothing oil,
Mop the hot sweat off my brow?
Come, oh Hekate, light up the dark night,
With your flaming torch bring me sparkling light
In my soul, hope to allow.

      http://newsinfo.inquirer.net/758967/chief-justice-ph-adoption-laws-recognize-foundlings-as-filipino-citizens

So maybe Atty. Tan despaired a bit too prematurely.

In the latest round of oral arguments, Chief Justice Sereno unleashed a powerful argument as to why foundlings should legally be considered Filipino citizens from birth aka natural born citizens. Foundlings are covered by our adoption laws and implicit in this is that under the Civil Code they are Filipino since that is a requirement for a child to be adopted. Equally important, for Sereno’s argument to hold water, her unstated premise is that contrary to Carpio and de Castro’s pronouncements at the SET tribunal, she is denying that the Constitution excludes foundlings from citizenship and instead is silent on the matter.

Furthermore, she revealed her belief that the burden of proof in the DQ cases against foundling Poe’s status as NBFC belongs to the numerous petitioners and not the foundling. There is a legal doctrine called the Impossible Condition which places the burden of proof on an accuser if the assailed party is required to perform something very difficult or impossible to in order to prevail in the case. Asking a foundling to name his or her parents falls within the acts covered by this doctrine.Again this is contrary to the views expressed by Carpio and the Comelec justices who subscribed to his view that persons claiming to have NBFC status.

It is premature to say however that Poe’s prospects for a favorable SC decision are no longer grim. CJ Sereno is only one vote among the many justices and there are at least 3 associate justices and all seven Comelec judges who will have ostrich-sized eggs on their faces if the cases against Poe and all Filipino foundlings is decided by the SC against them. The real battle royale will be during the SC deliberations which unfortunately is never public.

  22. Wilfredo G. Villanueva says:

Just posted this in Facebook. I’ll retranslate murky google translations, just say so, Joe and Bill:

All-out war siyempre. Resbak.

Magaling na abogado ‘to. Ang tama pwedeng gawing mali, ang mali, tama.

Pero bilib ako sa response ng Palasyo. Cool lang sila. Tinatanggap nila ang authority of the Senate to investigate in aid of legislation.

    • My comment about the Moros at that time was that it is a pity that Christian Filipinos do not (yet) have the same pintakasi (unity against enemies, even better when there is a common task) as Muslim Filipinos. Being there only for the family is a strength and a weakness.

In Albay there is now a unity – when storms come or Mayon rumbles. There already was unity back in the days when Moros came to raid the coasts for slaves, even if it was just to follow the churchbell and hide – in one of the stone churches or up in the hills like so many.

So there is also a unity in building a good place, something a leader like Joey Salceda taps. The Spanish policy of making Filipino Christian lowlanders weak-assed sheep they could rule did not really work in Albay, or in a lot of parts of rebellious Bikol for that matter…

Except for that brief period in the neighborhood of 1986, the extended period from 1983 to 2009 shows an unmistaken statistics of the losers lording over the gainers. The period 2010-2015 shows also an unmistaken statistics where losers and gainers are at near parity. Now, can one honestly say that the Administration of President Aquino has nothing to do with this?

Of course, we have to admit that if we do a moving average, for the period 2004-2010, there is a trend down for losers and a trend up — to a lower degree — for the gainers. We have to give credit where it is due. I believe some policies of President GMA have contributed to this trend.

      • The Official Gazette has some new interesting infographics on employment, proving that plenty of jobs were created in the past few years. In the last few weeks they have created a lot of infographics worth looking at and analyzing in more detail to rate the government.

      • Joe America says:

Yes, I noted the same thing in my head. Both of them. The contribution of Arroyo and the trending of Aquino and what is at risk in the election is the extension of the trend lines. Or not. Sometimes change is a dangerous thing.

Offtopic: will be expecting mudslinging, memes, and dirty jokes from the toxic opposition with this here picture with Miss Pia and Prez.

  24. @Bert: thanks for your offer… but I don’t think I will go to the Philippines during election time… sometime an afternoon with you and Karl in our area sipping some drinks in the shade is enough.

As for God being there… the refugee crisis continues to grow… one million have come already… Germany is offering Turkey a lot of money to keep the majority… Turkey is protesting about this.

The Greeks are being told to improve their border controls… the Greeks are angry and telling Germany and Austria they are already doing all they can… one look at the geography says all…

lots of Greek islands just off the Turkish coast and boats coming over in droves..

Then there is Macedonia which is non-EU, lots of people crossing there from Greece…

An Austrian town recently got slammed for banning refugees from public pools.. but there were incidents were they tried to go into women’s dressing rooms. An imam in Cologne recently blamed the assaulted women on New Year’s Eve for being too perfumed.. now if he smells bad, hit him?
