Is Sara smarter than Yellows, Pinks, and Left put together?

Analysis and Opinion

By Joe America

Does Sara have campaign infrastructure for the presidency in 2028? Does she have visibility? Financing? Social media program? Policy platform? The answer is yes to each.

Do the Yellows, Pinks, and/or Left have a campaign infrastructure? Visibility, none. Financing, none. Social media program, haphazard and voluntary. Policy platform, possibly but the three groups apparently can’t get along with one another. Sara gets along with herself quite well.

Blog commenter Joey Nguyen assessed the problem well:

  • Lies are simple enough to message, and excuses can be changed and exchanged to distract people. It is much harder to message the need for togetherness to build abundance, especially when there are many liars spreading fear and feelings of scarcity.

Is that powerful, or what? Liars have the advantage against a fragmented opposition. They slide right into the messaging vacuum.

Joey gets to the specifics:

  • Technocrats while being capable administrators, don’t help much here. That was Roxas’ fundamental problem. Robredo is an effective communicator, but she lacked the infrastructure at the time to spread the message. So there seems to be a need to build that infrastructure for the force of good. Perhaps something on the level of FDR or JFK. I had a look at Angat Buhay’s socials the other day and was a bit disappointed that the NGO has not posted on Twitter for years, and has no presence on Bluesky. Angat Buhay is quite active on Facebook though. Facebook is still where the Filipino “national conversation” takes place largely, as well as TikTok. Employing a team of young, effective and consistent messengers would be logical to combat the disinformation spread by an army of faceless propaganda accounts.

There is no need to let liars win the messaging battle, or the visibility battle.

Then Joey comes in with the heavy hammer, the point that it does not work to look at each election as if there were no future.

  • Not just a campaign infrastructure during election season, but a permanent infrastructure with off-year presence. The dynasty forces and the Duterte Nexus has this, while LP is still in the wilderness and Pinks are directionless. If my read on modern political history informs, without direction perhaps a large portion of Pinks will eventually become reactionaries which is what happened to quite a few EDSA supporters. The energy is there. It needs to be harnessed. Lack of money is a legitimate excuse, but that’s where organizing with effective messengers come in. Every movement starts with no money. Every movement starts with sustained volunteerism by those who believe in the message.

How is it that Sara can do these things but Yellows, Pinks, and the Left cannot?

Are people waiting for a savior? A candidate who will do all this by force of charm and personal will?

I’ve got a feeling about that. Super-heroes are in comic books and movies. They aren’t in the Philippines.

Ordinary people have to take the initiative. They have to work harder and smarter than Sara.

You can’t do that?

BOHOL, Philippines – A Filipino American ex-US Marine ran amok in Talisay City in Cebu, shooting and killing his stepson and the barangay captain of Lawaan III before he was killed in a shootout with police on Thursday, May 16.
Authorities say the suspect Dean Torrefranca’s motive was a property dispute with his stepson Jedd Ybañez.
According to interviews with local media livestreamed on Facebook, authorities say Jimmy Bartilic, the barangay captain, tried to go to help settle the dispute, but was shot and killed upon arriving at Torrefranca’s home at around 11 am.
He engaged police in a shootout before setting his own house on fire.
Torrefranca was killed after shooting it out with police for over an hour. No police officers or bystanders were reported injured in the shooutout. – Ryan Macasero/Rappler.com

Been trying to figure out the back story ever since. to no avail. cuz i like last stand stories. like Braveheart. but the Opposition opposed to VP Inday Sara needs to have this mind set. all or nothing. leave all of it in the arena. not espousing violence but as metaphor to winning. but also not that Torrefranca won, only that he left it all behind. literally. fight to death, karl– but metaphorically speaking here.

      • https://x.com/aikarobredo/status/1921960363752333362 I would prefer the approach that Aika Robredo outlines here, step by step. The results now are way better for the opposition than in 2022.

There are enough opposition Senators now (Hontiveros, Aquino, Pangilinan) to be real gadflies, and seems Diokno and De Lima are in Congress.

Atty Leni is Naga Mayor, Vico Sotto is Pasig Mayor, and Cynthia Villar LOST!!

Still, there is NO majority to impeach Inday Sara.

Trillanes seems to have lost in Caloocan, Bong Go is the Senator with the most votes, Bam Aquino is 2nd (seems INC endorsed him, I heard), Kiko Pangilinan 5th. Well, let’s see..

I noticed that bong go has new set of lower teeth, whiter now than the darker ones he used to have that made him looked like a mealy mouthed sea bass! the whiter new teeth made his jaws look firmer. may panga na baga siya, maybe his bite as well.

bong go differs from bato post election, in the sense that bato immediately used his win as nod to the old man at the hague. maybe, bato wants to be in hague too, arrested as well for his role in ejks.

      • In any case, Bam Aquino came across very energetic, especially at the end, Kiko Pangilinan mobilized every star in his extended family and around him, including the extremely popular Ben and Ben twins. Leila de Lima was barnstorming places all over the Philippines with renewed energy. Leni Robredo was the implied patron of the entire opposition. Joey’s idea that opposition should campaign using issues that affect people was utilized but not credited to him. To be fair, we are not main characters here, so they might have thought of it themselves.

I had a look at the replies on Joe’s socmed posts, and it seems that there was a strong visceral response to the blog title itself and not so much reading of the contents. Perhaps the readers are mostly passive consumers of information, which brings up a thought. The opposition needs to come up with simple slogans, and a lot of them. Then continually blast those slogans to counter the information narrative of the Duterte camp which pumps out memes at a prolific rate. At this point of watching what Marcos Jr. has done, I’d consider the Marcos camp to be a lesser worry. Without winning, ideological purity means nothing if there is no political power to effectuate elements of that ideology.

    • JoeAm's avatar JoeAm says:

I am eternally frustrated that followers read the headlines and not the articles. They are merely projecting themselves without attachment to worthwhile ideas. But I do sense there were some baby steps during this election at building political power among the Filipino libs. Kiko did it best with the entertainment set, and Bam with INC.

      • kasambahay's avatar kasambahay says:

2025 local election is apparently a bloodbath for celebrities turned candidates.

I’m so happy bam and kiko won, also delima and chel diokno. they had not chance with the media, and tried to dodge trolls and their deadly misinformation claws, but they had chances with social media and relentlessly walk the talk, laging magiikot rain or shine. they cannot afford to have media in tow, forever occupying front pages of tabloids and news online, with paid journalists doing stories on them and on anything they do, but they got with the public and into the voting crowd. holding firm against devastating poor poll survey results time and again, not dismayed nor disheartened, but turned the other cheek and redoubled their efforts, and it paid off, handsomely. apparently, there are a lot of younger voters that paid no respect to surveys, nor influenced by them.

so happy to see leni smiling ear to ear! the new mayor of naga did hold firm against the bashing of pinks, lashing out for her endorsing of questionable candidates. but leni is gracious, knows pinks maybe angry and needed to vent, but their hearts are on the right place and duly voted deserving pink candidates that leni endorsed.

        • JoeAm's avatar JoeAm says:

MLQ3 does a fine parsing of the election in an article out today (Asia Sentinel I believe).. The scorecard is Marcos 5, Duterte 5, and Libs 2, which leaves both dynasties glum (defeated 7 to 5) and the Libs ecstatic.

      • Joey Nguyen's avatar Joey Nguyen says:

I’ve been enjoying the non-political consultant class’s inputs now that new media is rising in the US. Outsiders who have been on the inside like Michael Cohen have been pushing for the Democratic Party to push messages in a succinct “bumper sticker” slogan. We educated people have a tendency to focus too much on details rather than the simple, larger picture. Trump has “Build the Wall,” “Make America Great Again” and so on. Duterte had “Build, Build, Build.”

There is a time for nuanced discussion, which is where strategists need to distill the nuance into simplicity that voters can understand. Then continually pump out the message ceaselessly. I see slogans as being more of a framework, a skeleton to work off of. After winning, a serious party can then add the nuance aka “meat on the bones” later.

  3. Joey Nguyen's avatar Joey Nguyen says:

After the midterm, but before the official results come in from Comelec, through conversations I’ve had with associates back in the Philippines I observed a few trends in Cebuano and Tausug speaking regions of Mindanao.

1.) A large amount of cash (nearly half a billion pesos) was nabbed at Mactan International Airport in Cebu, allegedly connected to the Que slay. There is a PRC organized crime connection. Of course, PRC-based crime syndicates have long been accused of being co-opted by the CCP “United Front” — manufactured opposition as a form of political and psychological control that extends into overseas influenced campaigns. The timing of the money being moved physically after being cashed out digital accounts in Cambodia brings up questions of an elaborate vote-buying scheme.

2.) Election-related violence in Tausug-majority areas, appearing to be between local control vs pro-Duterte camps, most prominently in Basilan.

3.) Vote-buying shenanigans appear to be blatant and rampant across Mindanao. I was shown examples of PDP partylist handouts by associates that were stacked with PDP and NPC candidates. With vote-buying being watched by Comelec, and the ban against moving large amounts of cash, it appears that the Duterte camp has prepared cash ahead of time. I was told there were party lookouts in case a Comelec official arrived at a vote-buying table. There were attempts to hide vote-buying as instead being the local colloquial “backing” wherein a voter is given a smaller amount of cash upfront by PDP, then after voting if the voter wanted to show he/she “backed” PDP by straight voting the partylist, the voter would receive the “backing money,” a much larger amount. I’ve heard reports of amounts of 5,000, 10,000, even 15,000 pesos total upfront + backing.

4.) Many Cebuano-speaking Mindanaoans took part in vote-buying, causing a rush at the PDP tables near each polling place. There were reports of deaths caused by stampedes to get the money. Two seniors in Zamboanga City were trampled and died from medical distress while the crowd pushed forward to receive money and relief goods. The day after had many Cebuano-majority areas of Mindanao enjoy “one day millionaires” as voters gleefully spent the money they received.

    • Joey Nguyen's avatar Joey Nguyen says:

To be honest I’m shocked at the monetary amount of the vote bribes this time, in a midterm even. This could be a sign of desperation by the Duterte Nexus as the fights the Dutertes picked previously (challenging Marcos Jr., “jokingly” pushing for Mindanao secession, Quiboloy’s KOJC being enforcers) largely failed.

Of course there has always been fraud during Philippines elections. I myself have been offered vote bribes previously, but the amounts used to be 500, 1,000 perhaps. But if there is one thing I know about the Philippines is that intense passion doesn’t always have follow through, so the devotion by some to the Dutertes really feels abnormal. One needs to wonder where all the cash required for this election’s excessive vote-buying came from… or if there is a PRC connection in all this.

        • LCPL_X's avatar LCPL_X says:

Sure theres vote buying, but like I’ve been saying since late last year, it’s this attacking (whether you wanna put air quotes on “attacking” or not) is what’s propelling VP Sara’s popularity. had she just been left alone in the VP Office and Dept ED, the tide s of politics woulda just passed her by. she’s thriving on the attention that has been given to her, in which she (by nature) has to fight back from. you take that away from her, eg. situations and or scenarios where she has to punch back. then she’s not really a self generating politician, due to lack of charisma etc.

Vote buying is an excuse (just like the whole DU30 won in 2016 cuz of facebook mindless droning), sure China will throw money into their preferred candidate. but that candidate has to have had captured the hearts of the people doing the voting. she has to be able to go viral herself, unlike VP Kamala Harris for example where in she was heavily propped up by the media, entertainment etc. in the end the people’s view of these candidates do matter— let me repeat, THEY DO MATTER.

So “attacking” VP Sara at Dept ED and VP Office; then taking her dad to The Hague. all that is a very easy “victimhood” storyline that lots of Filipinos can digest and relate to. Going forward the strategy has to be, to not give her these scenarios in which she can exhibit her true personality. because in the end that is the big problem. the “Punch the Sheriff” VP Sara is not what you want going viral, with or without vote buying. it just isn’t. cuz that’s what Filipinos like. the fighter in her.

Pinks Yellows Left have to be cognizant of this. Just be nice to her, which I think is VP Leni’s grand strategy with VP Sara. smile and let her just talk her “policies”. don’t let the fighter come out. That’s it.

at the end of the day its a popularity contest. and people like fighters. promote the dumb and awkward VP Sara, but if its seen by the masses as bullying, dial back. meaning just leave her alone and give her a long leash.

PBBM et al can, Joe. and they will, thus making VP Sara more popular.

I’m saying the Pinks, and Yellows, should just stay out of it, as they have been taking VP Leni’s lead. Trillanes probably lost because of this.

once PBBM et al are out of the running for 2028, then

it’ll just be VP Leni et al and VP Sara et al. when its that , and all the impeachment shenanigan are passed. then just wait her out, and not give VP Sara any drama. becuz VP Sara shines in drama.

              it’s like oxygen for her.

But I gotta feeling PBBM’s team will set up for Martial Law but this time blaming China not the NPA. if that happens VP Leni and VP Leni will have to team up.

But that’s how you defeat my beloved , Joe. don’t give her any opportunities in which she’ll have to fight. cuz she will.

The separation of powers in the Philippines is probably even weaker than the weakened state of the same in the US. I don’t think vote buying this time will be heavily prosecuted, just like the other times. After all for every vote buyer there is a vote seller. It seems the only way things shift in the Philippines unless the voter’s mindset is changed is when people feel sufficient pain and swing with one weighty mass to another side.

ahem, the aim is mayhap not really prosecution, these dumbo vote buyers are well guided and rehearsed, knew what to say and how to deflect. if they cannot be hit high, then maybe they can be hit low. put them on notice, that they have been seen doing the unthinkable, and people are made aware of it. for me, it all starts with both awareness and publicity, so we can take action later. like maybe ridicule them, gossip about them, made cutting remarks behind their backs, give them the evil eye, avoid them in the streets, spit after them, anything to make them feel uncomfortable, the passive way. we cannot be so confrontational and aggressive, those things often backfire.

PRC is expanding United Front affiliates into Taiwan by co-opting local criminal syndicates to undermine Taiwan’s democracy from the inside out. For those who are not aware, the United Front serves as the permissible domestic “opposition” to the CCP but in reality is fully controlled by the CCP. Allegedly the HK Triads and Falun Gong were co-opted a decade back as well, among other organizations. This fake “opposition” is why the Falun Gong for example runs one of the highest right-wing “anti-communist” media networks in the US through the Epoch News network. Another example are anti-communist crusaders such as Steve Bannon ally Miles Guo/Miles Kwok (aka Guo Wenhui), who upon digging were former CCP officials. The South Korean Unification Church (Moonies) whose late founder and “god” was a communist “defector” runs the fake newspaper Washington Times and is another player. I would not be surprised if the PRC has set up similar connections in the Philippines underworld, fueled by the shabu and fraud syndicates relationship with drug wholesalers and fraudsters in PRC.

It wouldn’t surprise me either. There are two fronts, that pursued by government and the Duterte crony connections. They both want the same thing, and it seems quite achievable.

pwe! I wish that is true. as the case maybe, china is getting closer and closer and those dumb asses are not going away, but here to stay with armed encroachment. we push them away, and here they still are, harassing jay tarriela and giving him more wrinkles. china is not going away, it is expanding instead and aiming for domination in the pacific. while russia is hankering to grab europe.

and double pwe! to pinoy communists. bangsamoro is already getting respectability, many of them are educated now and positioning themselves for government jobs. them communists should too, get jobs and education, maybe they can even go overseas and enjoy what they pretend to hate: western civilization!

Sad to say that the government keeps on saying diminished communists numbers but they keep on red tagging left and left.

  6. I would like to put this out.

I am theorizing that TikTok and FB or social media in general spelled Bong Revilla’s loss.

Traditional Media’s weakening allowed the social media narrative to win.

Millenials and Gen Z was convinced that voting for Bong Revilla is stupid and you will be laughed at. Just look at the comments of budots tiktoks facebook posts.

Basically that is also what happened to Wil Revillame.

Just make the them uncool through social media and you can free up slots for national maybe even provincial posts.

It does not help that there are fake videos and pictures of new AFP acquisitions and also fake attacks as if the actual attacks are not bad enough. No room for the boy who cried wolf.
