Kontra Bulate

Masyado kayong worrier. Relax lang. Hyper ka. OA.

Ang bulate ng “Bigay ni God ‘Yan, Inallow ni God ‘Yan”

Wala akong masabi dito.

Cool? Move on?

    • Welcome to the blog, Chico. I suggest you read a while and get used to our discussion format before wading in with pronouncements that can only be true if you have different values than most.

    Our economic managers are concerned:

What the Phili economic managers do not get is that for much of US and European businesses, it isn’t just fundamentals or comparative advantage or ROI that goes into the decision on where to invest. A state’s moral and ethical standing is considered as well. With EJKs a central issue, and the potential future instability, investors will be more wary.

This was evident in South Africa when it was still under apartheid. The investment potential was good, numbers were good, but many pulled out because of its apartheid policies.

You cannot build, build, build on the bones of the dead. It will crumble, crumble, crumble.

Congratulations to Joe, the TSH member- contributors to guest articles — Wil’s kontra bulate article being the current one — and the commenters and the readers of TSH blogs. You have all contributed significantly, I sincerely believe, in the nation-wide awakening that is reflected in the 18 point drop in the Duterte’s Net Satisfaction Rating.

I am amplifying my post above regarding Gatchalian. I am parsing the quotes attributed to Gatchalian:

“It’s just a part of the cycle of politics, and it shouldn’t be a cause for concern in Malacañang. What is clear in the survey results is that the Filipino people continue to trust the President and approve of his performance, despite the ratings dip.

“But the senator advised that the executive branch should not become complacent.

“I encourage the President and his administration to view these survey results as a constructive challenge to do more for the Filipino people. Corruption, poverty, and police impunity are three important issues in particular which deserve more attention from the executive branch.”

First paragraph: It is an Abella type of statement. Gatchalian, of course, is expected to be wary and wants to get more evidence towards a possible tipping point. He is an intelligent business-minded fellow and so wants to be careful.

Second and Third Paragraphs: Although couched in diplomatish, those two express the tip-of-the-iceberg message. There are no “immovable” objects in the Senate. I believe, he expresses an otherwise unsaid sentiment of the majority allied — presently — with Duterte.

Thanks karl. I am just trying to read how some of the “weather vane” Senators are reacting to the general change in sentiments — as now reflected in the SWS survey. Of course, we do not expect to credit a Pacquiao with the sense to make some such statement; he will just change spots at the last minute, counting on his boxing popularity to carry him through. Or a Villar, her considerable wealth will carry her through any re-election. Perhaps a changed Nancy Binay may.

              • NHerrera says:

                Welcome, karl.

Here is my last post on this thread.

I am a believer in the Surveys of SWS. We may criticize SWS surveys in different ways, and I too criticize it, but even in its present form — with its weaknesses, as noted by various groups — I would rather have it conduct its surveys than without it. Otherwise we may have only cooked-up surveys, the way fake news are foisted on us. SWS has established itself somehow and have the long-experience.

In the end, if only for validation, its recent survey result reflects what we here at TSH have observed. I do not expect the subsequent survey results to yield a monotonically downward trajectory; it may cycle up and down but with a general downward trend.

The results show too that most of the Filipinos are not as “moronic” as they may be portrayed. The ABC class may in fact be the moronic ones, doing what they do best — including transfer their wealth with the speed of light when the time comes, something the rest cannot do.

(N.B. I have not received anything from SWS to write this last post.)

              • The results show too that most of the Filipinos are not as “moronic” as they may be portrayed.

well, nearly every President started with high expectations except Arroyo, then went down. Could Will’s worm of wanting instant solutions and always complaining be related to this?

not moronic, but probably naive. Can any President solve any major issue of a country that has a lot of them – within his term? No, being able to make some headway is the maximum.

              • NHerrera says:

Agree about headway on certain major issue. If only from one President to the next, headway on a major issue is tackled and building on what was done previously and thereby whittle down the number of remaining major issues. President Aquino certainly did. A major issue Duterte is trying to make headway on is the “drug problem” through extraordinary means. But I don’t believe he is making a measure of success unless the associated killings is that measure.

              • karlgarcia says:

                @NH,
Maybe Acemoglu is right afterall, it applies to the Philippines so much, it fits like a glove.
The institutions are destroying the Philippines.
All three branches and their attached agencies.

    • Why thanks, NH, on behalf of all the contributors, which includes the various authors and the people who comment. The blog has the reputation of being honest and intelligent, and I think that is why we seldom have impolite visitors. Thanks for your part in the noise we make. 🙂

  8. If the new SWS survey is accurate, ang mga classes AB and C ang karamihan sa mga may bulate.

(If the SWS survey is accurate, the classes AB and C are the ones who need deworming. The plunge in the survey results of the D and E classes is in two digits in contrast with ABC’s 2 points (from 59 to 57). I thought about this because LCplX had been asking members of TSH about its process of mass outreach. It appears that the rich and educated class are the unyielding group when it comes to making the Duterte administration accountable.)

      JP:

I believe the following helps our perspective. In round percentage numbers — used by SWS for categorization — we have:

      ABC — 10
      D — 60
      E — 30

Ultimately, the masa, with some of those in the ABC class on their side of the equation, will decide. That is an axiom.

That is why I sense desperation in the recent moves of the Administration.

      • andrewlim8 says:

As I noted in a previous post, even the upper classes are now being hit by the culture of death/impunity.

      • Thank you for putting the survey result about the ABC classes in a positive perspective.

Still, I am flabbergasted that those who are supposed to be enlightened and can afford to be kind, just and honorable seem to condone the oppression of the less fortunate.

        • NHerrera says:

This Biblical passage my be relevant:

Jesus told him, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow Me.” When the young man heard this, he went away in sorrow, because he had great wealth. Then Jesus said to His disciples, “Truly I tell you, it is difficult for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven.…

    • “If the SWS survey is accurate, the classes AB and C are the ones who need deworming. “

      JP,

I’m not sure if deworming is the actual subject of this article, also in your above statement, or if it’s being used here as metaphor (worms).

But I know our medics/corpsman had some pretty strong medicine (forgot what its called, there were a couple), wherein after ingested , worms literally came crawling out of the body, either pooped out or actually crawl out, like from kids eyes and mouths and nose.

I saw someone poop out what looked like spaghetti but actually dead worms.

As for A-B class , and i guess C also, they’d not need deworming much since these kids won’t have played in the dirt, more like malls and nice schools, getting picked up in cars and stuff, right?

So as far as mass outreach, washing your hands, wearing shoes/sandals and basic sanitary briefings I’m sure will curb this worm epidemic,

don’t stick your hands in your mouth, or your feet.

      • It is not literal deworming, LCplX. It is a metaphor for ridding every Filipinos of culturally accepted behaviors that are detrimental to PH progress.

(Probably, deworming is the role of PRD in PH. He induced all our bad behaviors out in the open. For me, these are the worms that came out since he was elected:)

He went on to enumerate and elaborate the different “worms” he observed.

        1. Ang bulate ng Pagsasawalang-Kibo (The worm of timidity or silence).
2.Ang bulate ng Pagmumura’t Pangbabastos (The worm of Incivility (cussing and ridicule).
        3. Ang bulate ng Pagka-Reklamador (The worm of Destructive Criticism).
4.Ang bulate ng Pagka-Mainipin (The worm if Instant Gratification).
        5. Ang bulate ng Pagka Matigas na Puso (The worm of Closemindedness).
        6. Ang bulate ng Pagka Gaya-Gaya (The worm of Bandwagon Effect).
        7. Ang bulate ng Walang Pakialam (The worm of Apathy or “Don’t care” attitude).
        8. Ang bulate ng “Bigay ni God ‘Yan, Inallow ni God ‘Yan” (The worm of Fatalistic Religiosity or “It’s God’s will” reasoning).

In conclusion, he thanked PRD for making Filipinos realize that they have worms and need deworming. He asked Filipinos if they are OK with the worm infestation despite the fact that they could do something about it. Are they happy with the status quo or do they want to put the lessons learned in practice?

(Help, Kuya Will! If I missed something or lost some essence of your article in the interpretation, please correct me or explain it further to LCplX. Thank you.)

        • Thanks, JP!!!

Great summation! (kudos to Wil!!! 😉 ) —- you know the first thing I do when it’s Wil’s articles, for this one in particular can’t read it, but for the ones in English, i read, and keep track the number of shares on facebook enumerated up top, Wil consistently breaks 1K within like 24 hours.

The common formula is love; this one I’ve noticed only 101 count so far and its been 24 hours already, so there’s a difference in response.

It’s not the metaphor because Wil uses metaphors a lot; I think it’s the fact that worms and these behaviours are actually connected, related, so it’s not really a metaphor , JP (right , Wil?). Wil usually presents ideals (he’s a romantic),

this article (correct me if i’m reading it wrong) is darker and more realistic, not Wil’s common romantic escape-type writing.

I’m not sure if these worms are the human-behaviour altering parasites, listed here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Behavior-altering_parasites (it’s not listed on Wiki) , even if they’re not, that infographic w/ the article above still indicates altered cognition due to parasites.

But since edgar’s “virtium” (vice/virtue) is still fresh in mind, I’m thinking these worms (or other parasites found over there) may also be virtiums, parasites, though living off the host, cause the host to do things that help it survive.

This might be a stretch and I’m simply pounding a square into a circular hole (attempting to meld edgar’s and Wil’s articles), but yeah worms as virtiums.

Nonetheless. thanks Wil and JP for summarizing/translating the gist perfectly. I really appreciate it, JP 😉

Terminology is a call to ‘end’ or stop or limit the landscape of meaning at the word level for some agreed purpose. Semantics is ever lurking also.

LC, I just read your reply. Sorry for the delay.

                My take.

I must confess the limitations of my formal instructions in Philosophy. It is all what I was taught in my fr-soph years liberal arts, Scholastic Philosophy sequence: Logic, Epistemology, Ethics, Theodicy, Cosmology. Being Catholic, the topics and language of such courses were in preparation to understand Catholic & Ecclesiastical world of doctrine, dogma and morality. I hope I’m making sense. These are all melded in the logical lens I use to understand the outside world.

Thus do I understand the “constructs” of vice & virtue. To me the terms “vice” and “virtue” contain the idea of: what is the action (cause/effect) + who (me/other) are the objects of the action + how long is the (duration/habit) of the action. This understanding will determine whether the action is vice or virtue. Hence ambivalence in the terms is avoided.

In addition we include the “denotation” and “connotation” of terms to further polish out ambivalence.

Regarding the other blogsite on Gnostic Cosmology, I need time for getting used to the author’s terminology. 🙂

              • sonny says:

Cyd Ropp’s narrative is quite an engaging retelling of Genesis and John’s chap 1 Gospel. After the second reading, I looked up Gnosticism & Cosmology and was pleasantly surprised how Ropp & the Catholic Encyclopedia were in-synch (so far).

                http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/06592a.htm (Gnosticism)

              • Awesome, commentary, sonny! Thanks. Give me a couple of days to process your take on this and these links (just in time for edgars coming article Part 2),

‘To me the terms “vice” and “virtue” contain the idea of: what is the action (cause/effect) + who (me/other) are the objects of the action + how long is the (duration/habit) of the action. 12. PRD keep popping in my mind while reading the article below. The article is about “cult of personality.” Stalin, Mao, Mussolini, Hitler, and NK Kim were cited as examples but Trump, Berlusconi and Putin MOs (modus operandi) were discussed at length.

“Here’s the trick to cults of personality: the leader has to embody the people but also stand above them. He must appear ordinary, to allow people to relate to him. And yet he must also be seen as extraordinary, so that people will grant him permission to be the arbiter of their individual and national destiny.

For instance, they’re not about likeability. Leaders with cults of personality are usually aggressive. They keep audiences on edge with their outbursts and unpredictability. They create a bond that goes beyond agreeing with ideas and policies: people simply want a part of this person.”

“All three of these men have mastered the double appeal that is essential to cults of personality. They advertise their wealth and glamour, but connect with people as populists, using language full of earthy sayings, insults, coarse and broad humor (often directed at adversaries), and slogans (called “Putinisms” in Russia).”

Of those mentioned — Joseph Stalin, Mao Zedong, Benito Mussolini, Adolf Hitler, Silvio Berlusconi, Kim Jong-un, Vladimir Putin, and Donald Trump — it remains to be seen what will happen to the last three.

One thing, I feel certain, is that the set-up in the US, although presently tolerating “somewhat” this personality cult, will not last.

Kim Jong-un and Vladimir Putin: now theirs are cult personalities, variously described — especially numero uno: KJU.

Mattis tells Army to “be ready” on North Korea
MATTIS TELLS ARMY TO “BE READY” ON NORTH KOREA

Defense Secretary James Mattis says the U.S. Army “must stand ready” in the face of continued provocations by the North Korean regime.
While delivering the keynote address at the Association of the U.S. Army’s annual meeting on Monday, Mattis outlined the current strategy in North Korea for the U.S. military, saying “it is right now diplomatically led, economic sanctioned, buttressed effort to try to turn North Korea off its path.”
He conceded, however, that “neither you nor I can say” what the future holds for the regime.

“There’s one thing the U.S. Army can do, and that is you have got to be ready to ensure that we have military options that our president can employ if needed,” said Mattis.
Mattis embraced the current diplomatic approach to the crisis, including the UN-led sanctions on the regime supported by the international community.

Watch: Defense Secretary Mattis says N. Korea threat would bring “massive” military response
He added, “But that means the U.S. Army must stand ready, and so, if you’re ready, that’s your duty at this point in time. And I know the Army will always do its duty.”

Mattis’ comments come after Mr. Trump met with a group of military leaders at the White House on Friday, where he ominously warned the meeting was perhaps “the calm before the storm.” It was unclear if Mr. Trump was referring to the current crisis in region. Mr. Trump has also tweeted that “only one thing will work” in dealing with North Korea.

Mattis also called on Congress to consider military readiness, particularly as it relates to continued global threats, in its budget discussions.
“I am among majority in this country that believes our nation can afford survival and I want Congress to act in the driver’s seat of budget decision, not in the spectator seat of automatic cuts,” urged Mattis.

He said that he had “great confidence in the U.S. congress” but had “no confidence in automatic mathematical budget cuts.”

The secretary said the Department of Defense was now reworking its business practices to “gain the full benefit from every dollar spent on defense.”
“We’re taking aggressive action to reform the way we do business and to gain and to hold the trust of the congress and the American people that we are responsible stewards of the money allocated to us and that it translates directly every dollar into the defense of our country and what we stand for.”

Mattis said what is probably most important for the Department right now is laying out the problems the military faces to Congress “in compelling and persuasive terms”
“There are times when those of us who wear the uniform can be rightly condemned for being overly conservative, wanting more insurance and more boats and planes and guns and tanks and I understand that,” he said.

He added, “But I think the more we can explain we have the time right now to prepare for war is the best way to prevent war, should conflict break out, to get money later, will not be good enough because we won’t have the time at this point.”

Mattis also said that the military must lay out it’s necessary requirements, like proper funds for training and equipment, in such a way that it “leaves no doubt about the need for what we’re asking for in order to ensure that America’s army is at the top of its game.”

    • NHerrera says:

      Popoy,

If I may: Mattis makes sense and is careful about his words, but one of his purposes, I believe, is to be persuasive to the US Congress about the budget the military needs and that partly frames his statements.

Concerning your last line — the need to be guided and knowing what to do — if addressed to the mass of us who do not see eye-to-eye with the Administration, that is problematical.

      • popoy says:

NHerrera, If I may, I know which side I am on; and that’s DEMOCRACY. No problem, I should know what to do and help others know if they want to be on my side: if there’s a WW for freedom and WW against human rights subversion. Simplification is the antidote for problematics. If the present Administration sides with NOKOR and Communist China in case of a WW; proper TSOH guidance should not be problematical considering the depths of intellection it has plumbed to campaign for good governance.

What is problematical now in USA’s fight against NOKOR is that the American establishment (media, sports and entertainment) and political correctness apostles are pervasive and vehemently against their president. If push and shove turn into a WW, some shit will hit the fan and lots of righteous pride will have to be swallowed to make America the victor.

NOW who’s the president who correctly used the words will and shall like “I will not run nor shall I accept nomination for the Presidency of the United States? That I consider is what’s been historically problematical.

if only TSOH can start thinking like the POTUS, somebody in TSOH should start draining the swamp. Although we only have the Liguasan Marsh, not in the size of the Florida and Louisiana Bayous.

      • Ah, In the Philippines, the crocodiles (buwaya) are mostly found in slow moving rivers (ilog). I guess they also can be found in the Agusan and Liguasan marshes.

Draining the swamp in PH means cleaning the government of the corrupt and dynastic officials. With tribal PH, how do you suggest TSOH go about doing that?

Cleansing the government ranks will be a slow process involving social engineering. Social engineering in Psychology and Sociology involves designing people’s lives and their environment to support behavior change. For PH, this means more jobs and skills training so people will have the financial wherewithal to socially engineer their lives and environment.

TSOH members are strong proponents of economic developments that will expand the middle class because we view poverty as the primary cause of a lot of PH societal ills.

NHerrera presented the approximate percentages of the population in each of the economic classes in PH as follows: ABC = 10%; D = 60%; and E =. 30%. To further break the ABC class down, AB = 1%, C = 9%. PH middle class population is definitely small and the income inequality is glaring. The middle class, C, earns roughly US$11,500.00 annually. 90% of PH population only earn around US$3,600.00 annually.

        https://www.pinoymoneytalk.com/sec-abcde-percentage-population/

I personally believe that the present administration’s focus on the “War on Drugs” to induce societal change is misguided. How about trying a “War on Poverty”?

PS. I noticed that a lot of Filipinos comment in the politics and entertainment section of online newspaper but the business/economics sections’ comments section are usually blank. Maybe financial education for the masses will help?

        • popoy says:

Your above piece Juana P. is worth more than two congressional terms. I mean it. Because I think you don’t have the problem of CONSTANCY afflicting majority of Filipinos regardless of their S.E.S (socio-economic status). Halos lahat Constancia. WHAAT? Constant intentions, constant selfish interests, constant hunger for more. THE INSATIABLES, not to be mistaken with Natalie Coles’s song “Inseparables”.

Blogs of INCONSTANCY are mostly machineries OF SOMETHING GOOD FOR ALL, not of many bad things good only for an evil few. Name the blogs and the reading public will know. Stopping them is like dueling the devil.

There must be a way for OSMOSIS of good bloggers into the mainstream of governance. TSOH blogger who has said something USEFUL, who CAN MAKE A CONTRIBUTION, CAN BE OF SERVICE, and possesses DISTINCTIVE COMPETENCE (Not mine, but Noel Soriano’s philosophy) should find their way into the heart of public service.

The Filipino MIDAS TOUCH turns gold bricks into powdery hollow blocks. That’s what had happened to NGOs. Blogs now are bloody bogs. Mediocre leaders wallow and excel in furthering obeisance to their mediocrity: a modern form of idolatry. It boggles the mind to expect a carpenter to be an architect.

There are exceptions, but the rule prevails in the hierarchy of competence and limitations. Cops are good doing police work. Physicians are good in healing. And that’s it even in governing a country.

        • Sabtang Basco says:

The key word is “SOCIAL ENGINEERING”, thanks to Juana. POLITICS does not change the dynamics Filipino mentality. The current state of Filipino psyche must be changed to make political science work.

But, how to socially re-engineer the Filipinos? Martial Law is good tool to re-engineer the Filipinos but the soldiers, cabinets, bureaus and elected people are not good that makes Martial Law not good.

So, who does Filipinos run to? Not the President. He is only one against many crooks incompetents and high-flying jet-setting social-climbing appointees. There is only one Benigno Aquino. One Robredo, that makes it two. Benigno and Robredos are down to earth with their feet flat on the ground others are just prima donas and senoritos .
