The Receptors, Part 2

Literature, Amusement, and Politics in the Philippines

By Lance Corporal X

“I had Ted from the Korean desk suggest to his boy Yoon to do a martial law.”

“Why?”

“Because, Ted lost a bet!”

“No , I mean why martial law?”

“M, we don’t really know how all this works. But for sure there’s no grandfather paradox that happens when we insert ourselves. Trust me I’ve tried to affect it more than once. We go back and it’s a totally different strand timeline. I don’t really know what the Hierarchs are up to, but we’re immune to anything we do back there, here.”

“Okay, then why affect a martial law?”

“Well mostly to give P-pop a leg up.”

“Over K-pop?!!”

“Also it’s a good lesson for PBBM in case he and Martin and Liza are planning one. Which they are.”

Oh, great, J’s back.

“You know what the difference is between you and me, LCPL_X? I make this look good!”

“Man, shut the f up, J… before I say your wife’s name.”

“Keep my wife’s name out of your f’ing mouth, LCPL_X!”

“Just divorce her already, man.”

“I still love her.”

“You’re an idiot. Did you ever get that intel on General Brawner’s great gramps? Was he cavalry or infantry? officer or enlisted? and where and when did he separate? Cuz I’m reading Buffalo soldiers mostly saw action in Mindanao with Black Jack Pershing. Unless old man Brawner came earlier, which means he might have known David Fagen. Get on it, man.”

“I’m on it, bro. There’s just really nothing available. It’s like no ones interested in it. Give me a bit more time.”

“Did you hear about the Yoon martial law? I got Ted from Korean to make it happen, got PBBM and his minions all rattled now!”

“Hahahaha… I heard about that, and that you got PBBM himself to say ‘storm in a teacup’ instead of ‘tempest in a teapot’! Genius, man. Genius…”

“J, this is M by the way.”

“Dang, girl! you’re lucky I’m married.”

“Nice to finally meet you, J.”

“Likewise! I gotta run, guys…”

“Bye, J!!!”, “Later, dude.”

[J leaves.]

“LCPL_X, but why martial law?”

“Aside from detracting PBBM and company, I was also hoping it’ll encourage the Senate and the House to get their act together. That they can do exactly what the Korean National Assembly did.”

“So this secures Inday Sara’s 2028 election?”

“I dunno. I just overheard 3 guys at lunch talking about how Inday Sara won the presidency in 2022. I wanted to butt in their conversation and say, I’m Philippines desk, dudes! but I listened some more and realized they’re covering a totally different timeline strand as ours.”

“Maybe they’re with ASEAN desk or INDOPAC and or C/AUKUS desks?”

“Maybe.”

[Agent H walks in.]

“M, we gotta go to legal and get your psyops license ready for your next trip. LCPL_X, you hold the fort, we’ll be back soon enough.”

“Aye, aye, boss!”

[both leave.]

“How are you two getting along, M?”

“Fine. I also met J today.”

“Good.”

“Question, is LCPL_X retarded?”

“Honestly, M, the jury’s still out on that one. Why do you ask?”

“Because he doesn’t seem to think there are other strands of timeline.”

“Oh, he does. He’s just too vested in the one he’s vested on at the moment.”

“Why?”

“Because he can’t see past Inday Sara, he thinks the suns set and rise with her.”

“How’s that affect the work?”

“The Hierarchs think it’s good. Focus might be good. But I’m not sure.”

“Some infinities are bigger than others, I suppose.”

“I suppose. As soon as legal clears you, I want you to start reading up on VP Leni, Imee Marcos, Risa and Delima.”

“I’d rather focus on Maris Racal right now though.”

“No, she’s just distraction. M, that whole Pearl of the Planet rests on those 5 women in the Philippines. LCPL_X has Inday Sara on lock. You have to cover the other four. Maris Racal can wait.”

“I read that some guy in southern Africa also wrote on his blog that the Kalahari desert was also gonna be the Pearl of the Planet.”

“Maybe so, but there’s no pearls found in the Kalahari.”

“Actually, there are. They’re just made from ostrich eggs.”

“I did not know that. But I’m sure the Kalahari desert desk is handling that as we speak.”

“Is there really a Kalahari desert desk?”

“I really don’t know, M. But let’s stick to the Philippines. If the two pearls connect then they connect and we’ll cross that bridge when we’re there.”

“Roger, that.”

“Joe thinks Risa and Delima as well as VP Leni will set that Pearl of the Planet concept into motion; but LCPL_X thinks it will be Inday Sara and Imee, though he’s made efforts to consolidate all five women. But with his ‘tempest in a teapot’, I mean ‘storm in a teacup’ stunt it sure looks now that LCPL_X’s will be done.”

“It’s the English version of the idiom, instead of ‘tempest’ they say ‘storm’. PBBM’s just probably flexing his Cambridge six pack.”

“It’s actually Oxford, M.”

“Oh yeah, Oxford.”

“M, so now since impeachment will surely falter, just look at Yoon’s impeachment as comparison and ICC will now be a pipe dream thanks to Israel, the only means you have left is to start campaigning for 2028. 2025 is lost. Tell VP Leni to stop all this public transportation stuff, it’s not working. Risa and Delima have to do more appearances together. then eventually, join up with VP Leni. Let Delima waste her time with impeachment, but as soon as that ends just focus on getting her and Risa connected with VP Leni. that’s the only way to go now. Imee Marcos too.”

“So LCPL_X is winning?”

“Don’t think of it in terms of winning, M. or losing. In 10 years, their time, the world will start to collapse. Shrink actually. And their timeline will go silent eventually. We can access minds, but there will be no means to corroborate experiences. Right now we can, easily. This timeframe is the most fruitful. So we have to really drill down on what happened. LCPL_X is just doing his part, but not for long. As to J, I don’t know what he’s doing half the time.”

“CAP Marines and monks, he said, were his latest contribution to all this.”

“Joe’s on to something with Pearl of the Planet. Let’s just focus on that. Although the CAP Marines and monks without testicles are in line with Joe’s vision.”

“Okay I just uploaded all available knowledge on this timeline, H. I don’t think Angat Buhay is enough for the long game, cuz everything’s pointing to short games.”

“Let’s put a pin on that. We’re here. Legal.”

[legal: .-.. .. -.-. . -. … . / .–. .-. — -.-. . … … .. -. –. / .- .–. .–. .-. — …- . -.. .-.-.- ]

“All done?”

“Yup, that was quick.”

“M, LCPL_X won’t be with us for much longer. He’s gone native. We call it the Saint Sebastian syndrome. Always inviting arrows to his person. You’ve probably heard of John Allen Chau, similar arrow fetish. Instead of Romans, it was Sentinelese.”

“He’s getting transferred then?”

“Yes and no. We’re gonna have to kill him off. Metaphorically, of course. If he’s so much into speculative fiction, he can lateral to FICINT—those bunch of losers. But upload his stuff on the Oposa Doctrine, that’ll be important going forward. Humans’ most advance legal and philosophical concept to date. And Filipinos don’t even know about it.”

“Roger, that.”

“One last thing, M. This is the consciousness chamber.”

“Huh?”

“You’re not real. LCPL_X thinks he is. That’s where we screwed up. It’s best if you know all this now, so you can just focus on the work at hand.”

“How ’bout J?”

“He was just comic relief. M, are you okay? … M?”

The Receptors… I like that title, Joe. double triple meanings. multi-level. degrees of meaning. good one thanks for the title.

    • LCPL_X's avatar LCPL_X says:

lol… I just got it vis a vis the picture. you’re also insinuating the confidential funds recipients in pseudonyms. “The Receptors”.

      • Below is an analysis of the impeachment as being DOA:

        The Impeachment: DOA?

        • LCPL_X's avatar LCPL_X says:

          B. The impeachment complaints may have the form but arguably not the substance to constitute “loss of public trust”- The complaints are focused on Sara’s alleged “abuse” of the confidential funds entrusted to her.

I’ve always wondered about the Trillanes bank accounts, if he was able to get numbers so easily. He ought to have more proof to just lay out for everyone to see. case closed. It’s like the UFO, or kimono showing of thighs, Ireneo. just show the whole thing already! Open the kimono. instead of all these innuendoes.

totally agree with that assessment by the way.

Next summer after elections they can revisit these impeachments. but of course DE voters will be sick and tired of recycled food. they want variety.

I wish The Flash creates a paradox and change what happened today.

But what were they in power for?

These plunder cases pretty much mirror the Napoles case, karl. which means if folks start getting curious, they’ll find out that everyones on the take and receiving these moneys. so they can do these kangaroo courts to look good to their constituents and padrinos (bigger fish), but to actually lift the rug up completely is just impossible to do. because everyones implicated.

But this process that they are using against VP Sara, this should continue. grandfather VP Sara’s intel/confidential fund because it was under the auspices of PBBM really (only divulged or attacked per Liza/Martin), so let that one go. but from here on out, more budget hearings with more witnesses and bank accounts called in to be discovered. of course this will only cause bigger more sophisticated politicians to hide their ill gotten wealth better, but at least its not as obvious as before.

and you can still get small time politicians, especially Moros, etc. for example…

like bridges and buildings collapsing because funds were diverted to local or national politicians pockets. have better structural engineers that don’t get bought easily. like Eliott Nesses for building and safety departments.

  3. LCPL_X's avatar LCPL_X says:

here’s 2 examples of flash fiction 300-1000 usually or less words of quick story telling, you have to fit meaning in between lines and words so it closely is related to prose poetry, but needs characters and narrative to be fiction. the trick i saw in a youtube video is to simply just dive in , so no beginning or end. you clue in readers as to the background but the end you want to leave it open ended or to cause the reader to return to the first sentence thus completing a loop of sorts. I just came upon this

cuz I really liked how the first part came about, like inspired due to Joe’s 2200 and to that newly minted PhD’s olfactory thesis, but the part 2 which I tried to continue or recreate was more forced. so I’m kinda going into this rabbit hole of writing now vis a vis consciousness. like where do these stories come from. Hume says its just parts of other stories you’ve already come across, reading or watching or listening. but the truly original ones, and theres lots, where do they come from?

i dunno myself, but in keeping with the consciousness theme, i’m gonna keep pulling at this thread. because someone or something is budol‘ing us and I wanna find out who or what. who is responsible for this whole kabuki show?!! 歌舞伎

I really hope you guys get into this too, quick flash fiction just insert Philippine culture and or politics. here’s the best 2 videos on this:

here’s some Joan Didion to get you started:

          https://jarrettfuller.com/design-writing/downloads/Didion.pdf

            • “The Receptors are so wrong in believing everything is taste and smell,” said Aldub. “We, the Memorialists, know the past.”
“LCPL_X does mention touch as important,” Stell countered. “He is sex-crazed, that’s all,” said Aldub as he opened The Books.
“Popoy, the oldest of beings, wrote the Book of Creation, the Popol Vuh,” Aldub chanted. “Ed Lores wrote the Book of Mind and Heart.”
“And thus we are guided to do good and avoid evil,” Stell added. “as we are thankful for the Gospels of Joe, Karl, Gian, and Sonny.”
LCPL_X came in. “The Book of Sonny was a fragment added to centuries later, even with parts of the banned book of Irineo.”
“Thou speakest heresy, impure, lustful soul,” Aldub solemnly intoned. “Get thee behind us, Troll, tempt us not,” Stell added.
“We do agree that the Mayan calendar Joe the Baptist mentioned is real, and that we have been in the 5th creation cycle since December 26, 2012.” LCPL_X answered. “Ever since then, the star of the Philippines has risen.”
“The Great Scattering created new tribes like the Fil-Canadians, Fil-Australians, and Japinos.” he continued. “Jalapeños?” Stell asked. “Stop being corny,” Aldub retorted. “This discussion is going into anathema. Let us not be led astray after so many centuries.”
“Both Receptors and Memorialists are wrong in believing themselves never wrong.” LCPL_X stated. “Information networks without self-correction fail in the end.” Stell shook his head and answered “groups that lack principles waver and lose direction.”
“Guard, please show LCPL_X the door.” said Aldub. “We need to stay on topic.”
“How do we self-correct?” Stell asked Aldub. “We don’t. We just change course and pretend we never made a mistake.” Aldub answered. “Filipinos will never forgive those who back down or apologize, remember that, acolyte.” Stell joyfully intoned the monastic bell.

              • LCPL_X's avatar LCPL_X says:

“Information networks without self-correction fail in the end.”

LOL! I love this, Ireneo. If only I knew how to draw, this would be a perfect comic series. theres so much truth packed in that dialogue.

“How do we self-correct?” Stell asked Aldub. “We don’t. We just change course and pretend we never made a mistake.”

I do think PBBM is showing his maturity thru self correction. i hope he wasn’t just trying to budol everyone cuz if he was then it would simply just back fire. but i think Martin (and Liza) will now back down and pull their attack of Inday Sara.

I hope Inday Sara will exhibit similar restraint and self-correct. and quiet everything down. they are at an impasse, negative outcomes for both sides. no wins.

I wish NH was back cuz he’d enumerate game theory. more eloquently. but for PBBM and Inday Sara to gain they have to course correct and time travel back to summer of 2023 and just let GMA get her win forchrissakes.

                Let her have her win.

or no need to time travel, Christmas is perfect time to mend walls and extend bridges and kiss and make up in front of Liza. and Martin. but a brotherly love kinda kiss nothing lascivious. cuz my beloved loves beavers too.

                • LCPL_X's avatar LCPL_X says:

p.s.— Ireneo, can I ask how long it took you to write that. whether that’s inspired you think or was said dialogue already in the back of your mind or did it take longer to write. curious about your process, cuz I’m trying to write something before Christmas and I’m drawing a blank. but now having read yours I think I have an idea now which direction to go. so waiting for that aha! moment now. or i can trudge along and just stare at the Google email screen for something to pop up. not very optimal.

                  • I wrote it as a draft after your first receptor article appeared, but some of the characters and ideas floated around in drafts for a while. Often, it just takes the right trigger for ideas.

The character names Stell and Aldub are from contemporary Philippine popular culture. The Memorialists were partly inspired by your monastic article. I kinda put out stuff when it feels right and sounds right.

                    • LCPL_X's avatar LCPL_X says:

I kinda put out stuff when it feels right and sounds right.

You think you can keep this going, cuz I’d like to keep this Molly character going or maybe another one. and they seem to be completely from different realities (except for that LCPL_X character, that guys retarded but could be a genius too), but somehow they are sounding boards, like same software different hardware. Joe’s cool with this FICINT slash flash fiction. theres an added bonus too of summarizing current events. Please keep it coming, Ireneo. thanks!

                    • This was my non-fiction attempt at something similar, just before the 2022 elections:

                      Three Filipino Futures

Well, we can try to develop a more future oriented mindset in the readership, even as my Magic Kingdom scenario seems real with The Kingdom coming out. DE Filipinos can only deal with the present while many others are, it seems, in the Maharlika fantasy.

                    • LCPL_X's avatar LCPL_X says:

I think the future is bright, Ireneo. but at some point there will need to be some sort of culling, whether its from the top or from the bottom of the pyramid, i dunno. EJKs was that, but DU30 shoulda culled more from the top (i’m for cull the top). i guess thats the Napoleon model, but not so much Pol Pot/Robespierre. Syria will be instructive. lots of Sufis in that country, so I’m hoping they’ll counter balance a lot of the violence. but Syrians do pride themselves in their negotiations skills. they negotiated with Mongols. some say tamed them.

    • Karl Garcia's avatar Karl Garcia says:

That is not a rabbit diving into a rabbit hole? That is a rabbit pulled out by the magician from his hat.

Just make them readable and discussable.

If you end up talking to yourself them recalibrate in the pit stop.

      • I think LCPL_X is using this fiction to speculate on what branch of the Multiverse is best for the Philippines.
Based on what is decided now and not like in The Kingdom based on a huge What If.

        • LCPL_X's avatar LCPL_X says:

There’s the question as to where these ideas come from, like that Joan Didion essay (read the last paragraph of that pdf for TL;DR) where she posits she doesn’t really know who or what that “I” is. it certainly isn’t her, whatever “her” means.

          All about consciousness.

But for ABC voters I think its like that Iceland Sci-fi you shared , Ireneo. about bowing down to “lesser” folks, why I’m always talking about badjaos and negritos (and lumads) on here. ABC voters need to be humbled, because they are know it alls.

CDE voters need to fall back on old school stuff like arboralyo or juramentado, for example a bunch of lumads just went to the House yesterday to file complaint against Rep. France Castro and they were in their traditional garb.

more of that. reach back to old traditions and old ways of doing things.

But yeah, I’m also doing counter-factuals, FICINT and storytelling , looking into as means to get stuff across people in the Philippines. we still got 2025, 2026, 2027, and 2028. we need more variety in delivery of these ideas.

Joe needs our help. so he can have breaks to craft more blogs.

And introspection, which is “talking to yourself” is where you start, karl. It’s that or we all find something else to do with our time. like I said we got til 2028. that’s a long time. self-correction has to occur in the feedback loop. see Ireneo s flash fiction.

          • LCPL_X's avatar LCPL_X says:

Based on what is decided now and not like in The Kingdom based on a huge What If.

Agreed. How far you are from the decision tree wherein decisions are initially made makes the difference from counter-factual to What If. kinda like Wakanda (blacks shouldn’t be focused on Wakanda, instead read up on Black Wall Street, etc.). White Man’s Burden was the first Wakanda in Hollywood. didn’t do too well as a movie.

              Good read, here: https://thelampmagazine.com/blog/such-painful-mystery

              ===

The best Wallace can do within a utilitarian framework is to worry about where to draw the line. This line of logic leads him to ask whether what we know about animals’ physical suffering puts every gourmet—every omnivore, even—in a morally indefensible position. It’s a problem that could easily be posed, Singer-style, to a family sitting down to carve a perfectly roasted broad-breasted white turkey.

“What I really am is confused,” Wallace concludes. Not so Singer. Fifty years of advocacy for animals have convinced him that he understands animals’ pain well enough to construct a new theodicy, along with a new set of commandments for his fellow human beings. It’s a strikingly simplistic project, where animals’ lives are reduced to pleasure and pain, with a simplistic prescription: dial down the torture; turn up the furry and feathery joy. And it reveals both the arrogance and sentimentality of Singer’s moral code: we know what’s good for the turkeys, and we can grant them perfect happiness.

“The whole subject of the brute creation is to me one of such painful mystery that I dare not approach it,” Thomas Arnold wrote when considering a similar question. This seems to me much more honest, a simple and humbling confession that the animal kingdom and its role in our fate is more complex than we know. By acknowledging their pain we haven’t understood the animals—why they are here and why they seem to suffer our uses and abuses so mutely. And by minimizing their suffering we have not atoned. Our situation is rather worse: we don’t even know whether we need to.

This is not a problem that can be solved at the dinner table, over tofu or turkey. But against the sheer scale of death in this world Singer should admit that he too is fluttering his hands.

This essay appears in Christmas 2024 issue of The Lamp.

karl, so over here because of RFKjr’s new position and his stance on health issues are very clear and decisive so the food industry now is all up in arms, also pharmaceuticals. one issue in particular is his pro-butter and lard stance over overly processed cooking oils. cuz these oils essentially are the cause of colon cancer, and there is in fact an increase in colon cancer, karl. whether its due to these oils i don’t know, but thats the reasoning. i’m loving it cuz I cook with nothing but butter, ever since some guy told me butter makes food taste so much better. i wasn’t even thinking of colon cancer. now i’m no cook myself, and my repertoire is very limited but I can cook scrambled eggs like i’ve perfected that, karl. mostly i dabble with soup and use Crock-pot for almost anything. lotsa potatoes. now i don’t use lard ever but my favorite filipino dessert is hopia which I always get the baboy variety, karl. so maybe once a month i splurge in hopia baboy.

But my point is this cooking oils and colon cancer hoopla, where everyones stressing out cuz they’ve been eating so much of it. and I’m telling them dudes brake dust from cars is probably the biggest cause of cancer that no bodys talking about and you’re on the road more often, that’s probably a more appropriate worry to have. Just relax, we’re all gonna die is what I always say. soon enough. some sooner than later. Over there I guess on top of the brake dust would be the air full of pollutants our Clean air act over here especially California has cleaned up much of the air at least the visible particulates, thru smog checks and gas ingredients imposed.

  4. LCPL_X's avatar LCPL_X says:

    these were good reads too,

  5. I just experimented and asked Google Gemini to create a teleserye plot for a mix of Lam-Ang and Ang Probinsyano:

“Teleserye Title: Ang Alamat ni Lam-Ang sa Maynila

    Plot:
Lam-Ang, a modern-day millennial from a remote Philippine province, is forced to leave his peaceful life after his family is threatened by a powerful crime syndicate. Armed with his wits, martial arts skills (passed down from his legendary ancestor), and a loyal group of friends, he travels to the bustling metropolis of Manila.

In the city, Lam-Ang discovers a dark underworld controlled by a ruthless crime lord, Don Fernando. As he delves deeper into the criminal network, Lam-Ang uncovers a conspiracy that threatens not only his family but the entire city.

He becomes a vigilante, using his skills to fight against injustice and protect the innocent. Along the way, he crosses paths with a fearless female police officer who becomes both his ally and love interest.

    Key Elements:

    * Mythology and Modernity: Blending the mythical elements of the Lam-Ang legend with contemporary urban settings.

    * Action and Drama: High-octane action sequences, intense drama, and thrilling twists.

    * Social Commentary: Addressing relevant social issues such as poverty, corruption, and the challenges faced by provincial migrants.

    * Romance: A budding romance between Lam-Ang and the police officer, adding emotional depth to the story.

    * Family and Loyalty: Exploring themes of family, loyalty, and the lengths people will go to protect their loved ones.

    Possible Story Arcs:

    * Lam-Ang’s transformation from a simple provincial boy to a city vigilante.

    * The complex relationship between Lam-Ang and Don Fernando.

    * The challenges faced by Lam-Ang’s friends and allies as they get caught up in the conflict.

    * A romantic subplot between Lam-Ang and the police officer.

    * A climactic showdown between Lam-Ang and Don Fernando.

This teleserye offers a unique blend of action, drama, and mythology, promising to captivate audiences with its exciting story and relatable characters.”

  6. Asked Gemini to mix One Hundred Years of Solitude with the Rosales saga and set it in the Philippines:

“Tale of the Zambales: A Hundred Years of Solitude and the Rosales Saga
    Plot:
The story begins in the early 20th century in the rugged, sun-drenched province of Zambales. The ancestral home of the Del Mundo family, a sprawling hacienda nestled amidst rice paddies and coconut groves, is the epicenter of the narrative.
    Key Elements and Themes:
    * Magical Realism and Historical Fiction: Like “One Hundred Years of Solitude,” the novel will blend fantastical elements with historical events. Mythical creatures, prophecies, and supernatural occurrences will intertwine with the realities of Philippine history, particularly the American colonial period, World War II, and the Marcos dictatorship.
    * Family Saga and Generational Conflict: Similar to the Rosales Saga, the Del Mundo family will be at the heart of the story. Their lives will span generations, marked by love, loss, ambition, and betrayal. The novel will explore the complex dynamics between parents and children, siblings, and cousins, as well as the impact of historical events on family bonds.
    * Land, Power, and Corruption: The Del Mundo family’s wealth and influence are tied to the land. The novel will delve into the struggles for land ownership, the exploitation of resources, and the corruption that permeates Philippine society.
    * Social and Political Commentary: Like both source materials, the novel will address social and political issues, such as poverty, inequality, and the abuse of power. It will explore the experiences of marginalized groups, including indigenous peoples and the rural poor.
    * Myth and Folklore: Filipino mythology and folklore will be woven into the narrative. Characters may possess supernatural abilities or be connected to mythical beings. These elements will add depth and richness to the story, reflecting the cultural heritage of the Philippines.
    Potential Story Arcs:
    * The Rise and Fall of the Del Mundo Dynasty: The family’s rise to power, their subsequent decline, and their eventual resurgence over several generations.
    * A Forbidden Love Story: A tragic romance between two young lovers from different social classes, set against the backdrop of a tumultuous historical period.
    * A Quest for Identity: A young Del Mundo heir embarks on a journey of self-discovery, exploring their family’s history and their own place in the world.
    * A Political Awakening: A member of the family becomes involved in the Philippine revolutionary movement, fighting for independence and social justice.
    * A Supernatural Threat: A dark force, rooted in ancient legend, threatens the Del Mundo family and their ancestral home.
