I’d guess most of my thousands of followers on Facebook and X are in their 40s, 50s, and 60s. They are old school readers. I don’t know how to reach young people. My impression is they are into video rather than reading and writing.
I ask google and get:
“Young Filipinos predominantly use Facebook, TikTok, and YouTube as their primary social media platforms. Facebook is the most popular, followed by TikTok, which is experiencing rapid growth, especially among younger users. YouTube is also a significant platform for video content consumption.”
They also mention Instagram as a “middle class” medium. Neither X nor Blue Sky seem to appeal much to youth. I think they can’t write so lots of luck getting dialogue here at the blog from young adults.
I suppose if The Society of Honor aspired to find out what’s on young peoples’ minds, we’d have to do four things:
- Enter young people’s groups or conversations on Facebook
- Establish a Tik Tok presence
- Establish a You Tube channel
- Establish an Instagram presence
Wow! Lotta work, that.
I’m inclined to give up, haha! To do You Tube or Tik Tok I’d have to wear a mask. Well, fun that would be. And dance and be stupid if I understand how Tik Tok works. And I’m guessing young people don’t want to listen to what olds are peddling. It’s not cool, like listening to your parents.
I asked google what the top Facebook sites are for young people and got this:

I believe reading is diminishing as a human ability, and with it, the loss of a whole lot of energy, frequency, and vibration, all in favor of color and music that blend as a mind-numbing brown the tint of droppings devoid of blueberries and cranberries.
So what you are saying, JoeAm, is that giving young adults something to read is not a way to reach them, right?

If they want video I’d guess writing is not going to work. I’d not be inclined to shift the content of the blog to gaming or gossip. We may just have an enduring mutual disinterest, lol. What are your ideas as to how to reach younger adults?

Sorry for a late response, JoeAm, but I’ve been away from my desktop for a few days and I hate to use my phone for discussions like these.
I have no idea how to reach younger adults because the digital technology has left me behind. I never cared for social media. I’m too private a person and I am not comfortable with so many people reading my emails or whatever. As I have grown older, I have not had a need to reach younger adults, i.e. work did not demand it. So in that sense (since I have an aversion to social media) I have been lucky. I am sure if my field was marketing and my products were geared towards younger adults, I would have had to adapt to the digital technology.
A thought came to me as I typed this response. How do young adults reach older adults? Or do they feel no need to?
My guess is they feel no need to, but may as they press into politics.
Making a fool of ourselves? Come on, us old geezers (anybody over 30 years) stand no chance. Learn from Obama. He is not very tech savvy. The interview where he describes how his kids try to teach him TikTok is hilarious. But, he got young people to run the campaigns for young people. And why not?Get a small group of young people to design and make those social media campaigns. Support them and stay in the background to make sure they do not make a real mess of it. But: LET THEM FREE to do their thing. I loved how AOC did her campaign, it was very powerful. She made it clear that her opponents were out of touch. She won with a landslide.Gina was on the right track initially, she had young kids routing for her. Now, expand that to the power-10.
Well, fading to the background is very doable. Indeed it seems to me the only doable option given that I have no idea how to “get a small group of young people” in the Philippines to do anything. Joey could I suppose. It appears that during the last election, there was some communicating going on. I have no idea where or how and pretty much figure being out of the loop is quite a burdenless place to be.
admire AOC myself, but one thing the American progressives fail to recognize is that coalition building is still important. AOC has begun to understand this somewhat, but too many of her fellow progressives don’t. Case in point is replacing solidly Democratic seats doesn’t increase the Congressional majority at all, nor does American progressives (not so much AOC to be fair) demanding that moderate districts conform to metropolitan expectations help candidates win those seats from the other side. Moderate districts need the space to craft their own message tailored to that district’s constituency. After all, there is more than one way to convey through words the same message. A problem with American progressivism is there is too much of a fixation on politically academic fads, with the accompanying purity testing, that leads to candidates sounding unauthentic. Take Bernie Sanders for example, if he were in Europe would be more like a social democrat, yet he adopted “democratic socialist” 2016 onward, which is more divisive in a US that has a history of political anti-communism.
Personally I think FDR, JFK, LBJ had very succinct messaging that was vaguely optimistic enough to appeal to an electoral majority, yet gave room for big leaps in progress. Obama, the first Democrat I had voted for, also had a vaguely optimistic message that gained huge support, yet he did not use his supermajority Congress to push for a big leap in progress. That was one of Obama’s major failures which caused the present decline in power for the Democratic Party.
Certainly there are lessons here for the Philippines left. There are more similarities than most Filipinos would like to admit between the American left and Philippines left, with many of the accompanying problems. Messaging means nothing if there is no follow through. Lack of follow through creates disillusionment ripe for bad characters like Trump and Duterte to take advantage of.

That would be a fascinating challenge, the format and the content. It would take a considerable commitment and an investment in gear. Maybe even travel. So I’m thinking someone else will have to do it. I’m still in pondering mode, which involves beer, so I could be there awhile.
ahem, you could well be on the right track, with beer I mean. nobody says no to drinks and alcohol galore. food and starbucks, with plenty of drinks make for loose tongues, inhibitions too.
so unless one is pedo and has ulterior motives for approaching young people, young people are quite approachable as many have no real friends and dying for true friends, someone they can trust and tell their secrets. they have plenty of virtual friends though, and some of those virtual friends have to be unfriended for being uberly familiar bordering on stalking.
young people has been scammed, sextorted even, and paid the price for letting their guards down. so pardon me if young people are summat cautious and careful about acquaintances from across the divide. their parents must have warned them of stranger danger, and how they can be manipulated to do things that may harm them.
I’m inclined to let youth figure it out for themselves. I’ve already raised my kids.
many probly dont realize that youth need rules and set boundaries, sure they are rebels, but who arent? and they need affirmation that what they are doing is correct like a pat on the back, a smile or a small reward, else they will continue doing the wrong things much to annoyance of everybody.
if you think youths are off course, tell them. just be aware of boundaries like you cannot discipline other people’s kids. but you can tell their parents, nicely of course, else parents will bite your head off and tell you to mind your own business.
I can’t tell if they are off course or on it as they are on media where I am not. So their direction is totally theirs, un-influenced by me.
A mask on YouTube can look somewhat like this, Joey might know what that is called, it moves exactly as you move. I might try to be Vice Ganda, Karl could be Bart Simpson and LCPL_X would be Jesse Pinkman from Breaking Bad. One can distort one’s voice as well..

I have no idea what that means. But good that they ditched a few populists. My conclusion comes repeated back to the fact that they’ll figure it out.
probly means them gen z are very up to date and can use latest trends and gadget as means to end, or vice versa. they are extremely dexterous in more ways than one and are dedicated to pursuits worth pursuing, they are focused and wont veer off course until the race is called off, done, dusted and truly over. and that is some dedication worth commending. give them a good cause and they wont disappoint.
but letting them to figure things out alone by themselves is counterproductive. the do as I say and dont do as I do – wont work with them.
you have to be in the deep s h – t with them, be with them and show yourself: state what you want, your aim, your goal, and how badly you want to get there. get down on your hands and knees and set the holds no barred example, and they will get you there. done and delivered.

My twelve-year-old grandson trains in Taekwondo on weekends. He’s been at it fir a year now participating in several championships. He loves playing and constructing his transformers. He was trained to love books and reading by my daughter.

A modern horror story, or set of them, detailing a breakdown of moral codes as simple as education teaching knowledge-building tools, versus machine writing tools. I found this statement profound:

Employers will be hiring cheaters to short-cut their way to competence or loss of a job. I think the snake is out of the bag and repopulating the forest faster than farmers with machetes can hack them up.
What an adventure for young people who try to follow the rules in a world that has burned the rulebook. JoeJr is adept at using AI and adept at real-time thinking. If universities require oral and real-time exams, they’ll catch the cheaters. Employers, too. And some of the cheaters will become entrepreneurs like Lee who will sell their cheating skills. Well, I don’t know how MAGAs live with themselves either. I’m of pollyanna moral bearing and my sense of satisfaction with myself does not brook cheating, lying, or being cruel.
Clearly, it is already a morally broken world. Still, there will be paths for the honest, knowledgeable, and competent. Or they may become the rebels of the future, who knows.
I think after a magnificent slaughtering of humanity, new moral codes, healthy ones, will emerge.
Well GenZ’s job prospects and the various reasons for that generation’s inability to hold a job would be a concerning, but different matter that is quite complicated.
Politically, GenZ has largely been a brain hacked generation that can no longer think in complete sentences. They tend to be impulsive, lazy, and give up easily. In a world where their brains work in 15 second video clips and treating long-form podcasts as comforting background noise, political movements also must adapt. What is clear is that GenZ respects “authenticity,” possibly due to having very little actual human interaction themselves without being chaperoned. They see the spontaneity of 15 second video clips and the gang talking for hours about random topics as authentic, regardless of the content having truth or not. While I personally feel that these habitual tendencies are inane, I’m from a different, more self-reflective generation. And so politicians must adapt to new media formats and consumption patterns.
By now more than half of GenZ are of working age. Here in the US, many of them are still jobless or working in minimum salary jobs and living with their parents. From what I’ve seen it’s worse in the Philippines. I’m responsible for interviews of prospective applicants in my role as PM, and well, I try to avoid hiring GenZs because a job is not a daycare service.

I would say the turndowns for prospective rejections haven’t really changed. It goes along the lines of: “Thank you for your time, and we will keep you in mind.” It doesn’t read as an explicit rejection but it is a rejection.
The difference is quite a few GenZ prospectives act entitled to the job. Some have their parents texting them during the interview to give advice. I had an instance where a young man literally brought his mother to the interview.

It depends on the business and field, but in technical fields usually the manager does the hiring, while HR only takes care of the salary offer to the prospective. I’m not qualified to be a prime minister haha.

Is it true BPO hiring is now done 100% by A.I. like potential hires sit, put on head sets then A.I. in regular human voice calls to complain about this and that, wherein potential hires navigate thru (like an actual call customer), whilst A.I. is talking its also transcibing the call, plus evaluating everything from diction to politeness and actual getting things done efficiently.
Thus the first to go in BPO are the managers, or HR types, then eventually the call agents are gone. boom, no more BPO industry!!! question, what is the BPO industry in Philippines doing to address this specifically. like are their associations or groups of BPO managers that talk about this stuff? how ’bout the politicians, are Pinks/yellows talking about this? cuz instead of VP Sara, maybe they can focus on this?
but looks like they are rolling out BPO A.I. in the hiring process first. seems quality of A.I. s vary too, like robotic sounding just if then loops (cheap), and then like Notebook LM level voice with ability to give and take and be funny or mean (irate customer).
AI is used more in filtering out prospective applicant CVs, but this happens more in lower skilled positions like BPO. Yes, training scenarios may use AI “customers.” BPO outfits with clients who care less about customer service may use these tools, but clients who are customer service focused such as banks likely use human trainers. To me there is little difference between training with AI customers and bad human trainers for the former. For Amazon, T-Mobile or cable company agents to give an example, a lot of the CSAs seem to have minimal training then are throw into production.
The risk in putting many eggs into the BPO basket is not recognizing that the reason why the BPO industry exists is to take advantage of cheap labor overseas to do jobs that cannot yet be automated. Once those jobs are automated, the exported industry goes kaput.
The Indians leveled up the BPO businesses into world class IT service companies. I have less confidence that Filipino companies will do something similar. There is a sense of getting too comfortable in the Philippines.
I don’t think it is a matter of being too comfortable. Who is comfortable? Companies making money and people having money. A global condition. I think the “problem” of non-competitiveness is due to a failure of government to build paths for the talented into the employment hierarchy, and the innovation arena. Use sports as a readily observable industry where talent is not even sought, much less encouraged. Where are the open doors? It’s a day labor mentality, a rote instruction method. Reacting, struggling, getting to the next day. The problem is solvable. The shortcoming is of the leadership, not the people. The people do what they are told.
Setting that aside as all countries have their flaws and struggles, the Philippines is doing just fine. Indeed, it is stable, growing, evolving, working, and being itself.
I meant comfortable in the sense of being comfortable with the status quo. Whereas the DEs are usually blamed, I would place the onus on ABs who actually have power to effectuate change. But those Filipino conglomerates are more comfortable “serving” a captured market with imported goods sold in their mega malls which they also own.
As amazing as private businesses can innovate in the area of profit generation, the public goods involve little to no profit and often incur “losses” in the mindset of profit-driven business. The public good that I think would greatly benefit the Philippines is the government upgrading transportation infrastructure to better connect the islands to facilitate domestic trade then eventually building up to foreign trade. It’s difficult to get goods from Mindanao to Luzon. Heck it’s difficult to get goods from southern Cebu island to Cebu City…
One of the biggest problems the Philippines faces in terms of governance is that it seems quite a few elected officials have ties to oligarchs. Well, I guess that’s why you, with our help, are trying to seed better ideas to get public servants into positions of power whose feeling of responsibility is to the Filipino people rather than to a backer.

Thanks for sharing this. Amazing that since the time of this old article, not much has changed. At times I worry that the modern look of Philippines cities is a false lull into complacency with superficial accouterments. A facade can make something appear more embellished on the exterior, but the “bones” of the house may be rotten and still continue to rot. The American system provides for a way of continual national renewal and nourishment, though there are many times Americans get things wrong (quite badly occasionally), through injection of new ideas brought by migrants. When I contemplate on the way the Philippines does things, it seems to me that a new coat of paint gets applied without inspecting what lies beneath. Just like barong-barongs that sprouted up in metro areas, one can see a sense of beauty in the eclectic mess of slapping on a “new” piece of plywood or corrugated metal that the householder “found.” And that might not be a bad thing in the end, if that’s what Filipinos want.
Even sinners in the Philippines don’t repent. They just repaint. Principles are on paper, and when the principal is not around, the kids do what they want. People don’t want to get caught doing bad things because they will lose moral character. The certificate of moral character.
In the Indonesian video I shared, the countryside looks similar to the Philippines, but the houses have a craftsmanship similar to Filipino indigenous – or colonial ancestral – homes. There is a certain self-respect in that, something Filipinos might have lost along the way.
I believe people who feel good about themselves are likely to get more good works done than people who are constantly criticized. And there is a lot for Filipinos to be satisfied with, if not proud of, in a world going irrational and cruel. There are lots of imperfections and culprits here, for sure. But they are not the whole of the nation. Occasionally we should set the complaints aside and be happy with who we are. Just be happy about things. Then go back to work, neither victim nor culprit.
Yes, I don’t think excessive criticism is helpful, but I also think that lack of (constructive) criticism and the inability to accept accountability can be worse. I’ve been to countries where people are also quite poor, yet they didn’t aspire to more than the simplicity that they have, and that’s completely fine. In the Philippines there is a subtle sense of resentment of people wanting to aspire for more, but not knowing how to attain that “more,” and oftentimes when they are shown the way to do it don’t want to put in the work to attain that “more.” Not healthy at all. Filipinos want to have a better life for their children and themselves, that’s clear to me, yet are immersed in a culture that still expects the “datu” to give out the loot gained from war rather than taking personal initiative whether that datu is a politician or a family member who has a better salary. So it seems that the people’s mindset needs to be changed so they discover their own agency.
The way to do that is not through relentless criticism that does not change the life of struggle, but merely adds to it.
I have had coaching based on CliftonStrengths, an approach that kind of tries to milden the old corporate school of thought that intends to minimize weaknesses. Maybe the Philippines should also focus on its strengths first and just minimize the worst weaknesses for now.
Sometimes, you have to go step by step. Joey mentioned how informal settlers improvise their homes. Our gardener who lived in UP Balara gradually upgraded his place from boards to metal sheets to gradually having a hollow block wall as he got wealthier. When we came to Germany, we had hand me down clothing and used furniture, some even taken from the street back in the days when there was a collection of old furniture every three months. My father and I carried the stuff up and had to hurry as the flea market vendors were fast in getting the best stuff, and if one was too late, delinquents had vandalized what was left. Upgraded to buying IKEA later, that store was still mainly a discounter in the 1980s. And so on.. Thanks for the birthday greeting.

Increasing the reach of any movement often involves touching the lowest denominator. I think a mistake of modern small-L liberalism is that too often messaging is wrapped in academic speak. Simple messaging still works well and we should go back to that.
I think higher education teachers are aware that their students may cheat at essays, most essays carry about 40 per cent of over all grades/semester. topping essays does not necessary mean a pass, the remaining 60 per cent is still a problem. and students are still required to do class presentations where they are graded, contents must be seminal and must meet specific criteria. then there is the nerve wracking questions and answers after each presentations.
students are also graded on class participation, how well they join group discussions and how useful or factual their contributions are. then there is prescribed practicum (total of two per anum) where higher education students do field studies or attend out of school assignments where they are once again graded or appraised by an out of school facilitator.
some of the practicum last for around four days. students on practicum need not report to school on daily basis, but go straight to their assigned locations. they are responsible for their own transport, board and lodging, etc. once practicum is over, students are then back at school, hopefully wiser and have better grasp of the line of work and professionalism they will be engaging after graduation.

in philippines, gen z who have graduated from universities and colleges are entry level job ready having been tru the paces and the rigors of academia. they are keen, hard worker and dedicated. there isnt just enough jobs available to cater to them all and some go overseas to work at other jobs. thankfully though a new venue opened and more new teachers will be employed to address the nationwide teaching shortage.

That’s a hopeful development. I hope the program can do good. More often I’m seeing and hearing that those young Filipino teachers who may be the most dedicated go abroad due to a better work environment and salary. Thailand is the current destination. I worry about the free college tuition scheme which seems to have more downsides than upsides even if the intent of funneling students into needed courses has good intent. I have quite a few associates who pushed their children into BSED due to “free tuition,” when the young person clearly hated the idea of becoming a teacher.
ahem, many who took bsed transfer unto other programs like nursing on their 3rd or 4th year of studies and got credited for subjects already studied and passed. all roads lead to rome, ika. not all students know what course really suit them, or what avenues to pursue. though they think they knew, but like most adults who changed a number of jobs in their lifetime, students change midstream and become interested in other programs. so long as students dont drop out of universities and eventually graduated, fine by me.
Some yes, do shift to nursing or similar. The ones who are relying on free tuition need to shift to another course on the free tuition list though, and usually that ends up being Bs. Tourism Management, which does not seem like a very useful degree to me. It depends on the origin and time era of those Chinese movies though. Prior to the 2000s, much of Chinese media was dominated by Taiwanese and Hong Kong films/dramas. Hong Kong media was known for having distinct Chinese republican viewpoints as they had freedom. Now not much anymore. The mainland content have propagandistic elements as every PRC business is required to have communist commissars in their management. The propaganda is quite subtle.
