Mar Roxas: Ang Alamat, Ang Kathang Isip at ang Tutuong Tao

Iisa-isahin ko. Una, yung alamat, sunod yung sabi-sabi, pagkatapos yung tutuong tao.
Ang Alamat
Kapag andyan na siya, ang nasa isip mo yung alamat.
- Para sa iba, maaalala mo yung mga picture niya, sako-sakong bigas, nakahiga sa isang bloke ng yelo, semplang sa motorsiklo. Maaalala mo yung video ng meeting sa Tacloban, tinimpla para siraan siya, at iba pang paraan para baluktutin ang katotohanan.
- Para sa iba naman, maaalala yung pagbuhay sa Business Processing Outsourcing industry, mas kilala bilang call centers, tumatabo ng mahigit pa sa P20 bilyon kada taon para sa ekonomiya, yung mga tuloy-tuloy na walang-tawad na serbisyo para sa bayan sa ilalim ng tatlong pangulo ng republika na bumilib sa angking kakayanan niya.
- Para sa karamihan, isa siyang alamat dahil hinugot siya sa tadyang ng mayayaman, na palaging masasama sa mga teleserye, kayang-kaya paikutin ang mahihirap. Pasan-pasan ni Mar Roxas ang kasaysayan na ang mahihirap ay hindi kasama sa mga benepisyo ng bayan sa kadahilanang ang mayayaman at malalakas ay ligtas sa kaparusahan, ibinabahagi ang kanilang yaman sa kanilang mga kaibigan samantalang ang mahihirap ay nagdidildil sa katiting.
Tanggap ni Mar Roxas na ang tingin ng tao sa kanya ay kaya niyang kunin ang gusto niyang kunin; naiintindihan niya kung paano lumalaganap ang ganitong alamat dahil ganito naman talaga ang mga mayayaman sa tutuong buhay at sa mga sinusubaybayan nating mga drama. Inamin niya ito sa akin habang nanananghalian kami sa Ormoc, Leyte kasama ang ilang miyembro ng Liberal Party.
Bakit kaya magkasamang kumain ang isang “blogger” (tagasulat sa isang website sa internet) na si Joe America at ang kandidatong si Mar Roxas… na ang ulam ay sisig at lapu-lapu habang nagkakaigihan sila? Ang sagot: kapwa sila interesado sa isa’t-isa.

Yung mga mahilig maghanap ng butas, malamang ito ang sasabihin: “Joe, ginagamit ka lang.”
Ang sagot ko, ba’t naman hindi? Basta matino ang tao, at kumpiyansa siya sa kinatatayuan niya, sisiguraduhin niya na alam ng media ang kanyang prinsipiyo at mga programa para makatulong sa pagpapakalat ng impormasyon. Walang bawal sa aming meeting, wala ring pakiusap, walang pasaring or parinig. Ginalang niya ang kagustuhan kong maitago ang tunay na katauhan ko, ngunit tinanong niya kung okay lang na sabihin niya na nagkita kami. Ang sabi ko, “Yes, sure.” Siyanga nga pala, bukas din ang pinto ko sa ibang kandidatong pang national office kung malapit sila (Northern Leyte or Biliran).
Tutuo ang bigayan ng pagpapahalaga. Nalaman ko habang kumakain kami na mismong sa loob ng Liberal Party ay iniisip na pakawala ako ng administrasyon, na ako si Manuel L. Quezon III, o maski sinong taga-loob, na nagba-blog pang propaganda lang. Nakakapangilabot din. Noong ang daming bumabatikos sa Aquino administration, may isang blogger na nagngangalang Joe America o JoeAm na sumalungat sa unos ng mediang mahilig sa gulo at nagpakita ng pang-unawa, pagpapahalaga at walang tawad na kumpiyansa sa kabuuan ng Aquino administration. Hindi binayaran. Walang inaasahang kapalit. Sumulat ng walang komentaryo. Bugbog sarado ang administrasyon noon. Natuwa sila sa isang tagapagtanggol.
Ako rin naman, natutuwa ako sa gawain ng administrasyong Aquino… at ang maaaring magawa ni Mar Roxas… para umunlad ang bayang aking itinuring na akin. Natutuwa rin ang pamilya ko. Kailangan namin ang administrasyon para mapanatag kami, at pati na ang kinabukasan ng aking anak na isinilang na Pilipino, sa isang maunlad na bansang Pilipinas, na may oportunidad para umasenso.
Nagkakaintindihan kami ng administrasyon. Nakatutuwa rin na puspusan ang trabaho nila, kahit na hindi nakikita ng karamihan. Malinis ang intensyon ko na magpakita ng pagpapahalaga. Napakatutuo. Busilak.

Ang Kathang Isip
Tatlong bahagi meron ang kathang isip, sa ganang akin:
- Walang konek si Mar Roxas sa mahihirap kasi nga makapangyarihan siya.
- Mahinang klaseng manager (DOTC, DILG)
- Walang dating makipaghalubilo (mga letrato)
Mga kalaban din niya ang nagpapakalat nito. Tutuong tao si Mar Roxas, mapagkumbaba pa nga. Kahit sino, kaya niyang makaulayaw. Magaling na manager, kaya nga tatlong pangulo ng republika ang kinailangan siya, at ginamit ang kakayahan niya, kung bakit meron tayong BPOs, kung bakit mas mahusay na tayo ngayon sa pagtulong sa mga nasalanta ng bagyo. Yung walang aberyang pagbisita ng Papa Francisco sa Pilipinas, yung walang nangyaring gulo sa INK EDSA rally, sa APEC. Pinasisinungalingan ng lahat ng ito ang mga gustong sumira kay Roxas. At yung hindi raw marunong makihalubilo si Mar, hayaan ninyong ilahad ko ang mga nakita ko sa panananghalian namin, kung ano ang nalaman ko, na pwede ninyo nang isama sa sarili ninyong mga kaalaman.
Sipatin ninyo si Mar Roxas sa pamamagitan ng pananaw niya sa mundo, hindi sa pananaw ng mga kalaban niya o ng media na naghahanap ng butas at away. Hwag ninyo siyang hanapan ng pagka-makulit at magtuturo ng kamalian. Hwag ninyo siyang hanapan ng angas. Hwag ninyo siyang hanapan ng pamamaraan ng ganang inyo lang, para sa kapakanan ninyo lang, pero kung paano niya gagawin ito, para sa ikabubuti ng Pilipinas.
Ang Taong si Mar Roxas
Sa pananaw ko, si Mar Roxas ay parang isang Hapones, hindi isang Amerikano. Maaalahanin siya, pinaupo pa nga niya ako sa kabisera, siya pa mismo ang bumiyak ng itlog para ihalo sa nangangalit na sisig, tinatanaw niya kung puno ang baso ko ng Sprite, at ang plato ko, kung naguumapaw.
Ganyang-ganyan ang mga amo kong Hapones nang may mga meeting kami na kasama ang pananghalian, sa California. Yung nakatatandang Hapon ang nagiintindi ng nakababatang bisita. Nagbibigay pugay sila sa iba kasi wala namang mawawala sa kanila ngunit maganda ang kahihinatnan.
Teka muna. Ang mainit na pagtanggap, ganyan ang nararamdaman ko sa piyesta dito sa Pilipinas sa tuwina, kahit saan sa ating bayan. Palaging ang sarap ng pagtanggap, palaging buhos ang pag-kalinga, palaging maraming pagkain. Binabawi ko na ang una kong sinabi.
Si Mar Roxas ay buong-buong Pilipino.
Si Mar Roxas, at silang lahat sa mesa, lahat sila ay mga politiko, at ramdam ko na dalawa ang usapan kanilang ginagampanan. Ang isa sa kanila mismong kaisipan, walang nakaririnig, at ang isa sa labas, para sa lahat.
Pero baka lahat naman tayo ganun, ‘di ba?
Parang ang blogger at aking kaibigang si Irineo B.R. Salazar si Mar Roxas, masigabo, parang vacuum cleaner kung humigop ng kaalaman, at walang tigil sa paghanap ng kadahilanan, kapamaraanan. Ang daming alam ni Mar Roxas, makikita ito ninuman na nakikinig sa kanya. Kapag hindi niya alam ang pinaguusapan, hindi siya nagpapanggap, maghahanap siya ng may-alam ng paksa. Nabanggit ko na ang Biliran ay maaaring maging exporter ng energy sa pamamagitan ng geothermal and hydro power. Tinanong niya agad ang iba kung konektado ang Biliran sa national grid. Kasama daw, dadaan ng Leyte sa pamamagitan ng cable sa ilalim ng dagat. Dakip niya agad ang konsepto at hinahanapan niya ng kasagutan kung praktikal ang gawaing ito.
Uupo ba si Pangulong Binay sa harap ng Santo Papa sa ngalan ng bansang Pilipinas?
Kung may mga kakulangan siya, marahil ay itong mga ito: (1) sa sobrang bilis niya kumilos at magisip, nahuhuli ang iba, at (2) wa-is siya, kung baga magaling kumilates ng baraha, parang si Pangulong Aquino. Maaaring mali ako, kasi maiksi lang ang panahon na humagilap ng mga senyales. Pwedeng maging kakulangan, pwede ring kahusayan kasi nga dagsa ang pasok ng kailangang gawin kaagad, at pamumulitika ang kailangan para makamtan ang layunin.
Kakaiba ito: sa tingin ko ang mga tao sa tuktok ng national government ay nag-aari ng sobrang bilib sa sarili. Tingnan ninyo si VP Binay, Sen. Poe, Mayor Duterte at Sen. Santiago. Pagmasdan ninyo ang pananaw nila sa kanila sarili. Gabundok ang kompyansa sa sarili. Nalaman ko na pati si Mar Roxas ay ramdam din ang galing ng sarili niya, pero ang pagkakaiba ay hindi niya ito ginagamit para iangat ang sarili niya. Nakatuon ang bilib niya sa sarili sa paggawa ng dapat gawin, at gawin ng tama. Nakatuon ito sa mga ideya at ang paghanap ng mas magandang paraan. Nasasaktan niya ang sarili niya, sa tingin ko, dahil hindi siya mahangin katulad ng iba. Siguro ito ang dahilan kung bakit ang tingin sa kanya ng tao ay wala siyang binatbat, kasi wala siyang angas o tindi ng yabang.
Pero mali sila. Ang pagkabilib niya sa sarili ay ginagawa niyang tulay sa iba’t-ibang ideya, solusyon, sa walang habas na pagganap ng katungkulan. Hindi hangin.
Dalawang klase ang tao. May taong walang gagawin kundi mamuna, ang maghanap ng mali. Ang tawag dito, thinking critically. Meron naman ibang tao, bago kumilos, pinag-iisipan ng husto. Ito ang mga critical thinkers. Ganito si Mar. Hindi siya mapang-husga. Lulundagin niya ang ideya, mga problema, mga facts, hanggang solusyon na parang ipo-ipo sa bilis. Si Irineo Boy lang yata ang kayang makipagpaligsahan kay Mar, dahil ang talino nilang dalawa. Ang sarap siguro pagmasdan, si Irineo at si Mar, na aayusin ang isang problema. Parehong walang pagod. Daming nabasa. Daming ideya. Bukas ang pag-iisip. Galing mag-analyze. Mala-computer ang utak sa bilis. Hindi susuko hanggang ma-solve ng problema.
Kung presidente si Mar Roxas, siguro mag-bebenta na ng energy ang Biliran Province sa loob ng limang taon.
Alam ni Mar na para magtagumpay ang bayan, kailangan ng tuloy-tuloy at maigting na pag-unlad ng ekonomiya. Naghahanap siya ng paraan para tumaas pa nang isa o dalawang punto ang Gross Domestic Product o kabuuan ng mga produkto at serbisyo na ginawa ng bansa sa loob ng isang taon.
Tama na ang pagpapautang na garapal ang interes. Ihanay ang insurance companies ng bansa sa mga kompanya sa Japan para lumawak ang kayang i-offer sa mga customer. Ayusin ang masikip na trapik sa pamamagitan ng bus system. Tuloy-tuloy na paglilitis ng kaso sa mga hukuman para matigil na ang sobrang haba ng pagdinig; at kung hindi sisipot ang abogado sa paglitis, talo na ang kanyang kaso. Ipag-dugtong at patakbuhin gamit ang computer ang mga 144 na lungsod sa mga government agencies (BIR, NBI, atbp.) para bumilis ang serbisyo.
Tanggalin ang mga sagabal, mga nagpapabagal ng serbisyo. Tama na ang pananaw na tayo ay talunan.
“Kaya natin ‘to, gustuhin lang natin.”
‘Di ko alam kung eksaktong ito ang sinabi niya. Wala akong recorder at hindi ako sumulat sa notebook. Pero ito ang buod ng sinabi niya.
Gusto rin niyang alisin ang politics sa pag-desisyon tungkol sa magkano ang ibabahagi sa mga cities and municipalities. Ang tawag niya dito, “Back to Basics.” Bawat city at municipality ay makatatanggap ng P1,000 kada residente nito. Wala nang kinalaman ang National Government sa desisyon kung paano gagamitin ang pondo. Gusto ninyong magpatayo ng mga paaralan, kalye o seawall? Bahala na kayo. Ang tawag ni Mar dito, “Walang maiiwan,” para ang yaman ng bansa ay naibabahagi ng husto sa siyudad at kanayunan. Pero hindi pala maganda ang ibig sabihin ng “Walang Maiiwan,” parang nilimas ang lugar. (Natawa ako.) Hindi lang nawala ang kahulugan ng “Back to Basics,” nabaligtad pa. Kung kaya, “Back to Basics” na lang ang itinawag. Gagamitin nila ito para lumakas ang loob ng mga LGU na tumahak ng landas na naaayon sa sarili nilang direksyon at gustong kahinatnan.
Ang tingin ko, hawig ng Federalism. Pero talagang malaki ang hamon kay Mar Roxas. Sa unang bigwas ng gagawin niya, ang tingin ng tao ay ‘di kapani-paniwala dahil nga sa mga dahilan na tinukoy ko sa umpisa pa lang ng artikulong ito. Binibira siya ng mga katunggali niya. Ibibigay daw nila ang buwan, pero ‘di naman sinasabi kung paano.
May panloloko ang mga advertisement nila. Makikitang hindi siksikan ang mga tren, ang mga freeway walang trapik, at libre daw ang pagpapagamot. Kung kailan makakamtan ito, kung magkano ang gugugulin ‘di naman sinasabi. Ang bawat kamalian ng Aquino administration, si Mar Roxas ang may kasalanan. Lumalapat naman ang mga reklamo kasi nga, bitin na bitin na ang mga botante. Ma-trapik ka ba naman. Ang taas ng buwis. Hindi binibigyang halaga ang tao. At masama ang impormasyon dahil nga galing sa media na parang tabloid.
Nangangamba ako na hindi makakuha ng mensahe si Mar Roxas na malakas ang dating, sapul at may kahulugan. Ayaw niya kasi ng marumi ang pamamaraan. Pero yung iba, okay lang. Inilalako niya ang plataporma niya sa pamamagitan ng mga speech at interview. Duda ako kung maraming tao ang nakadadakip.
‘Di ko rin dakip nang husto ang plataporma, kung meron man akong naiintindihan pangilan-ngilan lang. Hindi ko makita ang lakas ng dating ng mga nais niyang gawin. Kailangang tumayo nang husto ang mga programa niya, malinaw at humahataw. Dapat maramdaman ng mga botante na may ginhawang darating. Kailangan niyang ipakita na naiiba siya, habang patuloy ang Daang Matuwid. Kung yuon ang plano, hindi niya binanggit sa akin.
Pero nagtataka ako . . .
Bakit kaya baligtad ang tingin ng Pilipino sa mga bagay-bagay? Yung bang ang tagumpay, ang tingin masama? Kapag mapagkumbaba ka,mahina ka? Tahimik ka, ibig sabihin walang sinabi? Yung mga ideya na mahirap gawin at binunot kung saan, gustong-gusto, pero wala naman pakialam kapag ipapaliwanag ang mga detalya, katunayan na kaya o hindi kayang gawin?
Naku, maling-mali ang tingin sa taong ito dahil sa pananaw ng lipunan…
Alam nyo, kenkoy pala itong si Mar Roxas, kaya maiintindihan natin kapag nagpa-picture siya sa ibabaw ng yelo. Ang mga tauhan niya, cool lang. Pero sobrang sipag at sigasig. Yung naunang mga tao niya, hatinggabi na, tawag pa nang tawag para lang maisingit ako sa schedule. (Salamat, Jonathan o Nathan o Athan, salamat, Ariel at Louis.)
Lumabas ng kwarto panandalian si Mar Roxas para batiin ang mga magulang ng Mayor ng Ormoc. Papasok pa lang ang mga pagkain. Pagbalik niya, medyo pinuna ang lahat dahil hindi pa nagumpisa kumain.
“Kasalan ng estranghero,” sabi ni Eric Gutierrez. (Nagkatawanan.)
Pagkaraan ng konting sandal, Mar Roxas: “Joe, lubus-lubusin mo na ang kuha sa sisig, kasi pag umikot ang plato sa mesa, ubos ‘yan.” (Tawanan ulit.)
“Maayos ang pangangatawan mo,” sabi ko, nuon medyo matumal ang usapan. “Paano mo ginagawa?”
“Kaiisip!” sabi niya, hindi nag-atubili. (Tawanan) Mahirap nga raw makapag-exercise gawa ng sobrang dami ang trabaho.
Gusto ko yung pagka-natural niya, walang pagkukunwari, isa itong palatandaan ng galing niyang humawak ng tao. Nakakagana. Wala siyang angas, at hindi niya hinahanap sa tauhan niya na itrato siyang parang amo. Kung makinig, taos. Ganun din pag-nagsasalita. Hindi talaga nagyayabang. Kung magsalita, eksakto, may mga solusyon, madaling intindihin dahil hindi suntok sa buwan. Nagpapasa ng trabaho, at pinagkakatiwalaan ang mga tauhan.
Isa lang ang sa kanyang nasa isip: ang gawin ang trabaho ng husto at tama.
Hahaha, natatawa ako. Alam ko, tatawagin akong “Bayaran!” “Sipsip!” “Uto-uto!” Okay lang sa akin. Sinusulat ko lang ang nakikita ko. Gawa kayo ng sarili nyong kwento. Yan ang ginagawa ng taong ‘di gustong malaman kung ano ang katotohanan.
Pero sa tutuo lang, humihingi ako ng pasensya. (Sabi sa inyo, mahilig akong maging apologist.) Sobrang dali kasi sa mga pagpipilian dito sa eleksiyong ito, pero heto tayo, debate pa nang debate.
May suhestiyon ako. Kumuha kayo ng mga picture ng mga tatakbong pagka-Presidente… Poe, Binay, Santiago, Duterte at Roxas. Isama ninyo pa si Estrada Ang Kuluban kung sakali. I-paskel ninyo sa pader.
Gawa kayo ng Rorschach test, yung ink blot test.
Sa loob ng sampung segundo, sipatin ninyo ang bawat picture at husgahan ninyo.
Tapos mag-muni-muni kayo sa judgment ninyo.
Kita ninyo? Hindi ang mga kandidato ang binibigyan ng test.
Kayo ang tine-test.
At ang bayang Pilipinas.

And that’s what I would call a grandslam reply.
Kuhang kuha mo. Kung sa pagkuha ng impormasyon tungkol sa Wharton — nandyan naman and staff nya at utusan na si Pimentel at Cayetano — hindi magawa, nakababahala talaga. Ano yan: shoot now, research later? HORROR.
Duterte once mentioned that he broke somebody’s hands with firewood and later found out it was the wrong person to punish.
E dahil abogago siya, sasabihin siguro: o ngayon anong kaso? Illegal possesion of firewood?

I wasn’t able to say this when joe’s blog came out. I didn’t know how hard taking care of a baby would be.
The Daang Matuwid 1.0 connected with people because we had 10 years of PGMA. 3++ years with Erap’s term and if you believe the Hello Garci controversy 6 years of FPJ’s term.
It connected because it had a very good example of what it would not be.
This explains Poe’s and Duterte’s strategy. What ails Metro Manilans the most? What ails each region the most.
Poe had a sizeable lead pre Duterte because she used what was most present in the minds of MM voters.
Duterte is also running against what people see. They see crimes committed because simple crimes in MM make the 8PM news. They feel unsafe because they know of people who are victims.
This is one of the reasons Mar is having such a hard time. People watch the news and they are less informed. People feel the growing pains of an economy slowly being unleashed and they lash out at this pain.
Mar is the only one running on a positive note and the media and people have been accustomed to be wary of such positive things. His message is met with bewilderment and oft times scorn.
But I am not saying anything new.
Do we abandon Daang Matuwid? NO.
Then what must be done? Recast Daang Matuwid to what even Mar calls Daang Matuwid 2.0.
How will this be done?
As Mar said Daang Matuwid is a set of values that when taken together leads to good government. That is no longer enough.
These set of values must be shown to lead to more things than good governance.
It must be shown that Daang Matuwid 2.0 leads to lower crime rates.
It must be shown that Daang Matuwid 2.0 leads to better job prospects.
It must be shown that Daang Matuwid 2.0 leads to lower prices.
…
etc.
Even then it would be an uphill battle. Why? because it is easier to pin ones hope to a newbie that has succeeded elsewhere ((il)Logic of voters)
May as well focus on TESDA and how it creates an escape valve from poverty. Focus on how Daang Matuwid allowed TESDA to grow into one of the most important achievements of this Administration.
Emphasize the military stuff that has been bought the past 6 years.
Emphasize how Daang Matuwid is the only one that is facing China head on while every other candidate is a coward wanting appeasement.
(K-12 is a hard sell because people just see the extra two years. You can sell this in a targeted way in FB and other social media sites.
If something requires nuance then sell it in a targeted way and have your keyboard warriors on standby to craft the message.)
Well, Papa, congratulations on the newborn, and welcome to the exhaustion that becomes every diligent father’s due. I assure you that on the balance sheet of fatherhood, it all works out properly so that the joys emerge, just the way Will would write them.

One should also emphasize that K-12 vocational track has two years vocational training (TVET) which is part of TESDA, and that Dual Training which is part of it makes workers more qualified.
Meaning that they qualify for industrial jobs like under K-12+, because they are trained on the job it is likely they will have a job immediately after finishing… better lives than Edward Endo.

I still think pre-law is a good program that can happen under the humanities track (HUMSS), but maybe repackaged to invoke the ideals of leadership—– Leadership track (me, sonny and karl were talking about the lack of military/leadership schools in the Philippines).
This TESDA program, is this separate, or can some aspects of this program aligned with the STEM track of 11/12th grades? ie., Remember the Maker libraries and groups we talked about awhile back? if TESDA/STEM are hands-on programs, consolidate them, is what I’m saying. Is this feasible?
And if we re-tool pre-law (from ACLU article) to Leadership, then we can tack on entrepreneurship with it, ie. you gotta know the laws to thrive in business, and be a leader to make things happen in business, so the 11/12th grade ABM and HUMSS tracks can be consolidated with Bam Aquino’s Negosyo Centers.

I think a feisty Mar is good. This back and forth dares and challenges between Mar and Duterte might seem childish to some but both candidates get to hug the news. I see a Trump-like strategy. Mar can show he can be also tough in his own way while criticizing his opponent at the same time. Slowly, he can carry the discussion to national issues, where he is strong in that department.
I remember the first Obama vs Romney debate wherein Obama was always on the defensive and didn’t attack Romney. Obama was perceived to be weak and was criticized heavily for his performance. On the second debate, Obama came out swinging and prepared and gained survey points. If this is normal human psychology at work among voters worldwide, Mar could benefit from it also.
Agree. Plus, Roxas swings with his feet planted on the canvas, a reputation for earnest work, whereas Duterte (and others) are slipping and sliding when they comment. It shows desperation rather than competence. Roxas wins every time.
I think now is the time to bring Korina into the fray. A bit of jabs that will show her love for Mar will bring him closer to the D-E segments. Korina is a more popular with the masa than Mar Roxas. She needs to help him.
The problem is that she is a bit polarizing among the fence-sitters. It would be a calculated risk. I suspect he has some cards up his sleeve, but Korina is not one of the cards. He wants to remain the candidate, much as Leni Robredo wants to run, apart from the reputation of Jesse. Korina blurs or muddies the picture.

I hope the Roxas camp would tweak the Mr. Palengke concept of their 2004 campaign ad to reach the Filipino masses in this presidential campaign. Mar connected with the masses before, I believe he can do it again. I also like the idea in the Ronald Reagan ad (Its morning in america again) a member here posted a few articles ago. It was simple and easy for the viewer to understand, with an appeal for continuity and improvement for the gains already made.
I agree with Joeam on the FastForward music video. I think it is a good video. It appeals to the hip young generation. That ad targeted that segment. I hope it also appeals to the masses but I doubt it. A different ad is needed for that segment of the population. The FastForward video may have been heavily criticized by netizens but if we sit back for a moment and think about it, as of this writing, it has already garnered 600,000 views and rising. After that video, a Duterte music video appeared among others. Looks like the competition or their supporters got worried and immediately put up their own. News papers are covering the FastForward video, some like it, some don’t. Even if they are criticizing it, they are talking about it. Many becomes curious and watch the video. The objective is done and the message is delivered. One actor, Ramon Bautista was also criticized but it became an opportunity for him to list the contributions of Mar as a reply to his detractors. His list was long and even if you don’t like Mar, it would force you think for a moment. A seed of thought is planted. It could be part of the harvest in next year’s elections.
Youtube/Facebook and other social media are cheap and effective medium of disseminating information to the voters. It looks like the Roxas camp understands this by their FastForward music video opening salvo.
The media and some netizens maybe bias against Mar, but as I see it, the recent ads and actions of Mar are forcing the media to cover him. I think Mar is correctly taking advantage of the situation by injecting snippets of the need to discuss platforms of government. In the Roxas camp’s next ads or youtube videos, I hope they can clearly tie the contributions of Mar to the public, which I believe are not very well known like the cheaper medicines, exemptions from taxes of minimum wage workers and the growth of the BPO industry, among others. I remember the Enrile campaign a few years ago where the ads focused on his attacks on power companies overcharging customers. He presented himself as a protector of the consumer and to my dismay, the voting public voted him back to the senate. I remember some friends justifying their vote for Enrile because of that ad.
No taxes on minimum wages, philhealth coverage, free or cheap government hospital care, jobs, and cheap medicines are areas that the masses relate to in their day to day lives because these things are on the top of their main concerns, unlike the middle class and elites. I have friends who have benefited from Mar’s programs but have no clue that these are the fruits of Mar’s hard work and that of the present administration’s. I myself only realized Mar’s programs after I watched DZMM’s coverage of presidential candidates wherein he was the first guest.
Nice healthy view reflecting an open mind and an objective search for information. I wish all voters had that same reasoning power. Good advice, too.
Just saying I used to admire your write ups but when you introduce Mar Roxas as something as vague as I have directly observed here in Philippines as a BPO employee, my view on guys change 360 degrees. Padding information in his background is already an open minder. But for me it started when how he dealt Yolanda situation. That was just one of the many typhoons that usually crossed Philippines but given though that was the biggest and strongest. He was not humane in handling the situation and it lead me to question in his candidacy as a president.

How was he not humane? He lambasted the supposed first responder Mayor fior being away,when there was already a warning that his province would be hit,How could he be prepaired when he was not there.he acted as too late the hero and he was fast in passing the buck to the national government.
Compare how the LGU in Tacloban reacted or did not react to how Albay Governor Salceda reacted to Nona just now, has reacted to numerous typhoons and volcanic eruptions.
But also how the people of Albay and their governor stick together in times of crisis.

@Justalurker, I suggest you view or watch the complete and the unedited version of the encounter between Mar and the mayor of Tacloban. If you do not become exasperated after watching the clip, then I do not know what will exasperate you.
And think of the provinces hit by Yolanda, all of them cooperated with the National Government and all of them except Tacloban sustained minimal casualties.

Seriously, there are Dutertistas who believe each Filipino will get a million pesos if he wins, because they look at the trillions of national budget and “dibay-dibay” – divide it by 100 million.
Not the faintest idea of economics. Not even basics. Maybe the sane Filipinos should find an island somewhere, or a found a city somewhere in Western Australia, and leave things to them.
“He was not humane.” What is the basis for this conclusion? I hope not that edited video enounter with the Mayor. If he were not humane, he would not have been in Tacloban the night the typhoon hit (Leyte Park Hotel) and would not have been on the ground early in the morning, going out when he was advised not to, to help move bodies and direct the clearing of the airport for relief. I really dislike misrepresentation of good people with remarks that are actually cruel.
The “bahala kayp sa buhay ninyo” statement was directed at the Romualdezes who neglected their own people and then were not cooperative in making way for the national government to help them. It is being misconstrued by the anti-Roxas camp as elitist and uncaring.
The worst spin some are putting on it is the COA report on some unliquidated Yolanda funds. The fact that some stuff has been done sloppily by whoever in a government apparatus that is in many places still very inefficient is being made into a story of Mar Roxas stealing money to fund his campaign. Total jumping to conclusions but that in combination with a statement taken out of context forms a piece of black propaganda that fuels anger which blocks all reason… 😦
Correct me if I’m wrong, but one of the first things that Romualdez did after Yolanda was to hitch a plane out of there. I remember watching him grant interviews to CNN (while in Manila!), milking his air time for all it was worth.
But because it’s easy and convenient, let’s just dump all the blame on Mar Roxas.

It all looks a bit strange to me from abroad and having been away so long… when I tuned back into Philippine events due to Mamasapano, my first reflexes where to follow long-held prejudices.
These prejudices come from the social groups in the Philippines that descend from colonialism and from the politics of the country over decades… different social groups have certain ways of talking and acting that other groups associate with certain attitudes… nobody is totally free of it.
But having now gotten a clearer picture of things, I ask myself what the hell is this all still about? Cory still had a very pronounced upper class, Americanized attitude, very far from the people. Noynoy is nearly as “baduy”, meaning normal Filipino, as everybody else. He speaks Tagalog and uses it in his speeches, something which would have been unthinkable for someone of his class many years ago. Of course each social group retains certain mannerisms, so some think when Mar speaks that he is “arrogant”, and some find Binay not only dark but also “vulgar” who knows.
Now it could be that Mar is really arrogant, and Binay just a poor dark guy whom everybody sees as a thief, just like cops in the US are more likely to suspect a black man. It could be that Duterte is just a typical Mindanao Visayan dealing in offhand sarcasm like many of them do, who knows.
Judging by prejudices will not go away that easily, isn’t fully gone in the US, and playing the victim and discrimination card is also not going to go away either. The Philippines seems to be still very fragmented, even if seen from outside, they all have become more similar than 30 years ago. Cory still was very much the pious Catholic housewife cum Americanized upper class woman, her son went against the Catholic church, yet still is judged and seen as a “hypocrite” by those who carry the class he comes from in mind. Who kissed the ring of the Pope, wasn’t it Binay?

I’m still intrigued by the academic background of Sen Mar Roxas. I gather that he graduated from the Ateneo High School and has an undergraduate Economics from the Wharton School of UPenn. I don’t know if he went to Wharton straight out of high school or there was a year or two at another school before Wharton. He spent 7 years as an investment banker after Economics school.
Ateneo High School, the Wharton School and Investment Banking, these institutions work off from a blueprint of academic excellence and a tradition of success.
Focus the Ateneo High School. The blueprint is the vaunted Jesuit educational system, it is a brand. It has a name: “Ratio Studiorum” (Method of Studies). In simplest terms it is the Jesuit cookie cutter for education. Anyone who goes to a Jesuit school will get a distinctive taste for this, colleges, high schools, grammar schools run by the Jesuits have this imprint, e.g. Rizal, Recto. The scholastic tradition goes back to 1599.
The Ateneo High School in Manila is no exception. For the exceptional student encountering this system, it is truly a test of steel on steel. I submit this must have been the case with Sen Mar and Pres PNoy and Manny Pangilinan. For Sen Mar to go through all three institutions, this fact does speak for many things about him. For me anyway.

Both have also worked in a non-favored setting, which makes a big difference from having just worked in the Philippines where a certain status can make things TOO easy for you.

He was 22 when he got his Wharton degree. There may have been 2 years of schooling somewhere to go from Ph to US, if he graduated from high school at 16.
Also what I suspect, Joe. Trump’s daughter did two years at Fordham before going to Wharton. I suspect not a few also do this to prepare for admission to Wharton. I would understand. Manny Pangilinan completed Economics at the Ateneo (cum laude) before going to Wharton Business school. Solita Monsod did a variation, I think.
Makes sense. But what struck me was that he was 22 at the time. He is now 58, although he looks about 48 in person. He has done a lot since he got his degree.
Sen Mar impresses me more than another person I attached hope and a very positive future for the country, ex-Pres GMA going into tenure and Econ credentials. I was all wet with my skepticism of PNoy’s capability at the same start. I hope this time Sen Mar wins and proves me right. And as you said, Joe: “He has done a lot since he got his degree.”
